It’s probably just a personal preference thing, which I can respect. I know the “n” word is a terrible example but a bunch, I mean, a BUNCH of people in my family use it and I absolutely hate it. Like, I can feel myself twitch when I hear it. And, to them, it’s not bad to say because “I’m black and I can use it,” and that’s how they think. And we can argue until the sun comes up as to why it’s a terrible word choice, but in their mind, they’ve turned the negative into a positive, and… yeah, extreme example, but you get it ^^
I sort of thought that, overall, “bend” was a… I dunno how to phrase it. Kind of like how when the black Sailor Moon fanart was going around it was “racebend” which I didn’t take as offensive, it was just the artist’s interpretation of the character. The artist made her black, they changed her skin color, so they “racebent.”
I kind of think of it like this. When I was a kid, I really wanted more main character strong ladies, or more black main characters, so I’d think, “Wouldn’t it be cool if this male character were female?” I mean, growing up, playing games like Street Fighter there was 1 lady out of 12 characters (Street Fighter II, at least, the original just had Ryu and Ken). And while I loved Chun-Li to bits it was like, “… I want more ladies,” or, “It would be cool if Ryu was a girl,” or something like that.
Same with racebending. Though I think racebending is something I thought of more, like, all of the shows I watched had barely any black characters, as far as anime/cartoons went. There were plenty of sitcoms (Fresh Prince, Living Single, A Different World, ect.) but for those cool, geeky things it was like, “… all right there’s Storm and… uh… Storm…” or, “hey there’s random, big lipped general #5 in this anime.” So my brain would be like, “Wouldn’t it be cool to have more black characters,” or, “Wouldn’t it be cool if Sailor Moon was a black girl?” Or even, as dumb as this might sound, “Her name is Black Cat… wouldn’t it be cool if…”
I can think of maybe three cartoons with a bunch of black people: Fat Albert, the MC Hammer cartoon (not even kidding), and this weird sports cartoon that had Michael Jackson, Bo Jackson, and Wayne Gretzy. Or, you know, the few times in Tom and Jerry when Tom had a black owner and you’d see her legs and nothing else.
So long story short, I guess… back then I didn’t know it had a name (it probably didn’t), but now we use “bend,” and to some people that may be offensive. Which, that’s not what I’m trying to do. I honestly really love seeing what people come up with for characters, and sometimes, there’s this 10 year old little girl voice that goes, “EEE BLACK SAILOR MOON!!!” Obviously the artist isn’t being offensive, they’re not like, “Doing black Sailor Moon because fuck white Sailor Moon,” it’s just, “Hey, wouldn’t it be cool if this character I love looked more like me?”

I don’t mean to be offensive at all. I love all sorts of variations of characters (female versions to male characters, or vice versa, or black versions to characters, all sorts of things, that’s the fun part of fanart: seeing someone else’s interpretation of a character) I definitely do not mean to come off as being offensive to the trans community at all. I’ve reblogged trans characters before, too, or trans interpretations (like Naoto being trans, for example, because I pretty much love Naoto no matter what and love all of the different interpretations of the character)
I didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings though, I didn’t know it was something that could come off as offensive. To me “genderbent” means, “Hey this character is canonly male, I’m making a female version,” and vice versa. Not for any sort of malicious reason, just sort of an artist interpretation? Or cosplay interpretation, like the Street Fighter video with the females doing the male characters, and the male doing the female character. See, I thought that was cool, because usually in a group that does that, from what I’ve seen, you’d find a female Ryu faster than a male Chun-Li. I thought it was cool that they didn’t just have the females do it, or just excluded Chun-Li because there wasn’t a guy willing to do it to match the group.
But I could be wrong, I guess. If it is offensive I’m sorry. If there’s a different word for it (which I guess there’s technically “crossplay” but then I wonder about that too because for some cosplayers it’s more than “crossplay” for them) then I’ll try to remember to use it.

… she was a magical girl BEFORE Homura. The reason why she doesn’t fight is because Homura is trying to prevent it from happening, and each time she ends up fighting anyway. Even so, it was Madoka who saved Homura in the beginning, she was a soldier first.
But even if you take out that element, she’s like… in 8th grade? Give her a minute to cope with the psycho rabbit cat thing that sits in her bedroom and watches as her world falls apart. I mean, for fucks sake, her best friend turns into a crazy witch. And that’s just ONE time line, there have been others.
It’s kind of a big deal.

So recently Josh introduced me to Persona 4 (via the anime, I haven’t played the game yet) in the hopes that I would want to cosplay someone from it (I think he was hoping I’d go for yukiko), also because he thought I’d enjoy it*. While I really liked Yukiko’s persona (and have cosplay plans for her in the future), I actually really want to do a genderbent version of Kanji (because he is the best). Josh says he’d do a genderbent Naoto with me (though I have to figure out how that would work) for a casual day at a con (like an evening cosplay for dragon con or one day of nycc so we can actually see stuff).
Here’s my first musings/thoughts on how I plan to genderbend Kanji.
*and I did! sooo good! except he didn’t warn me that there’s a *real* downer section and I cried a bunch. Like “Grave of the Fireflies” sad.

A day where we get in our pajamas, get millions of pillows and blankets, buy a lot of snacks, make a castle, watch tons and tons of disney movies, and just snuggle together. And why not, we’ll have a pillow fight too. Just a whole day, spending precious time with you… I’d do anything just to have this kind of day with you.
“I fail to see the appeal of this.”

Naoto sighs as she sits on one of the many pillows that have now bred across their floor. There’s a stack of movies in front of her, old clamp shelled VHS cases that are completely obsolete. Kanji insists that it’s the best way to have one of these kinds of dates, even if they’re both too young to know if that’s true or not.
“They do carry these same animated movies on blu-ray.”
“I know,” Kanji says, looking over the wires to the VCR he managed to rescue from one of the boxes in his mother’s storage closet. "But this makes it more meaningful, yeah?“
"Is that even going to work on this T.V.?”
“Ain’t no reason why it wouldn’t.”
Except Naoto is right, as always. The ancient video player has no effect on the flat screen T.V. She doesn’t bother saying I told you so, already feeling bad for the sad frown on Kanji’s face. ”We can still have our date,” she says, “We have all of the snacks and all of the pillows. We can still do this.”
“I guess. But what are we gonna watch?”
It’s not exactly an animated fairy tale, but there’s still plenty of romance between Raleigh and Mako to satisfy Kanji’s sappy heart. The battle of jaegers versus kaiju is just an added bonus, one that Naoto happily watches.
