This is a long story, heh.
So, we used to ride the bus together when we were 12-14. We knew each other by face, said hello, etc. But we weren’t really friends, I didn’t even know his name.
Then we both kinda coincidentally fell into the DDR mall rat niche in early high school. I recognized him and introduced myself and then we talking on AIM and stuff, got to know each other and became good friends.
I started dating a mutual friend of ours from the time I was 14-16, Chris (that’s my bfs name) and I worked together and generally had a good time and we all hung out on the weekends. My (then) boyfriend was nice enough guy but he was pretty self centered. I don’t hold it against him, we were just kids. I’m sure I was self-centered too.
So when I was 16 I lost my younger sister to suicide, she was 14. Throughout that entire ordeal my boyfriend at the time was non-present. He tried his best but after a while he couldn’t deal. About 2 months after my sister passed away he told me I need to “get over it” and I just couldn’t process that. Looking back on it, I realize he was just immature but at the time I was (understandibly) livid. Chris had been there during the funeral planning with my family, was there at the funeral, the days following the funeral and so on. He was also, for all intents and purposes, my best friend. So I ditched the ex and a couple months later I pursued Chris.
The rest is history, I guess. It’s been 7 years lol. He took me to my first con in 2006 (same year my sister passed away/we started dating). He’s one of my best friends. We bicker a good bit because our personalities contrast a LOT (he’s an introvert and I’m a very obnoxious extrovert) but for the most part we do okay!
Sorry anon, I’m sure you weren’t looking for all that, but it’s all necessary pieces.

Also, sorry about your sister :( I can’t believe your ex said to get over it O.o I lost my brother when I was 13 and even at the age of 30 I’m not “over it,” I probably never will be. But at least you had Chris by your side, he sounds great!
