The Inner Workings of a Chibi.

Anonymous asked: I love that you have put yourself out there, advocating for plus size cosplayers. You do such a great job of articulating your point, it really defuses the arguments the haters make. I am also such a huge fan of your writing. You create such memorable characters and plotting. However, there is one aspect that kinda takes me out of the stories. It's your tendency to use "creative spelling" for some of the names. It may just be me, but it feels like you're trying too hard to be clever with it.

Thanks for the kind words, anon.  And I’m glad you like my writing, too!  As for names, here’s my terrible secret: I’m TERRIBLE with names, and I do try too hard.  I don’t know what it is  >.<  I think in my attempt to make people memorable, I think they need some snazzy cool name.  My partner is much better with coming up with names, like in our upcoming book together there’s some really awesome names, and for some reason my brain is like, “Uh I guess I could name him Peter NO THAT’S TOO SIMPLE OMG STFU let’s spell it weird…”  I think I’m getting a bit better at it, though, as I keep writing  :)

Anonymous asked: I love you and I love your blog. Because of you I feel like I can cosplay characters I never would have had the confidence to cosplay before. I've always wanted to cosplay Wonder Woman or Belle but I always thought someone with my body type could never do it. Seeing you look so amazing in your costumes having so much fun has made me rethink that maybe I can do it!!

Hell.  Yes.  Cosplay who you want!  I really, really love the fact that my cosplay seems to be giving people confidence.  Spread the confidence around!

I’d love it if even one person did this

Go on ANON and tell me what you think of me. I do not want to know who it is, at all. Don’t tell me who it is, don’t give me hints, don’t say your screen name. Tell me exactly what you think of me. Don’t sugarcoat things. Don’t lie. If you hate me, tell me why. Tell me what I’m doing wrong. If you like me, tell me why. Tell me exactly what you think of me.

Same Love, Different Perspectives?

kaiserneko:

It’s come to my attention very recently that there is a large percentage of the LGBT community out there who not only do not appreciate/enjoy “Same Love” by Macklemore, but they in fact find it insulting that a heterosexual would try and sing on the behalf of our cause and orientation.

First off: Do any of you homosexuals out there who take issue with this song realize the boon that it is to have an intensely popular, heterosexual singer openly supporting us? With a beautiful, 100% legitimate song dedicated to our orientation and the issues we face?

We need this kind of support, in case you haven’t noticed. We’ve made quite the progress over the last several decades but while acceptance is at an all time high, we’re not exactly getting the fairest of treatment by mainstream media, nor are getting the sort of bi-partisan exposure and discussion that we absolutely need.

Having heterosexuals support us is so incredibly beneficial. It sets a positive example for other heterosexual men and women that may listen and enjoy them and their music.

Second: I really don’t give a damn if he’s heterosexual, when it comes to identifying with us. He sees inequality, he comprehends the sort of pain and sadness that discrimination and irrational fear bring, and he just wants to send out a positive, reaffirming message.

Stop acting like just because you’re homosexual, only you get to talk about it. His perspective is valid and his belief is legitimate; stop trying to quell the exploration of the subject and let those different from us show their love and support.

At the very least, allow them to put their own perspective into the public image. It’s their right.

Wow.  Didn’t I just reblog this like an hour ago about Madonna?

But seriously, this whole attitude of “since you aren’t like me you can’t understand me so stop talking/singing/acting/whatever as if you know me” needs to stop.  The point of our cause it to get support.  Now that we’re getting support, we should be happy, not, “Well you’re not gay so you don’t know what you’re talking about.”  If that were the case I should be mad at the people in office in my state because they’re not gay, yet they had a vote and decided that it was o.k. for me to get married.  But wait, they aren’t gay, so they don’t understand right?

I, for one, feel really, really happy when someone outside the minority group sees that things need to change.  When my white friends get pissed when someone is being racist, I’m happy that they get it.  When election season came up here and my straight friends voted no, and cheered when Minnesota became one of the states to allow gay married, I was thrilled.  That means that they want to see me happy, they want me to have the same rights they do, and think it’s bullshit that I don’t.  When people were talking about “legitimate rape” and things being “her fault for what she was wearing” and men stepped up like, “What the fuck are you talking about,” it was like… great.  Yes.  Thank you.  Thank you for being on my side on this.

This sudden rush of people who feel like straight people, or white people, or men, and things like that can’t fight for us because they aren’t us is crazy.  Haven’t we been WANTING them to understand?  The fact that this song is at the top of the charts is a huge, huge deal.  And it’s not loud or violent or pissed off, it’s just… a guy talking calmly about how things need to change.  That’s it.  What’s so wrong with that?

This is genius, omg, because I hate cereal dust that’s like the worst part for me, and I try to carefully get the last bit of cereal in mah bowl then I swear softly when dust gets in, or if there’s a few cereal bits at the bottom of the bag IN the dust, just… god.

… this is the woman you follow, everyone, some plus sized cosplaying writing dork who complains about cereal dust.

Cosplay ramblings

There’s this idea I want to discuss, this concept people have in regards to plus sized cosplay.  Some people say things like, “they need to be aware of their body.”  They say these things to be helpful, because “people can be mean,” and things like that.

I get what you’re saying, but honestly?  That’s not very helpful.

I get that you’re trying to give us warning, because you’re right, people CAN be mean.  They can say horrible things to plus sized cosplayers, tell them who they shouldn’t cosplay because of their weight.  This also goes for cosplayers of color, how they’re not the right race, or crossplay, or just… anything really.

However.

At this point, we as diverse cosplayers… already know that these people exist.  Not just because of the cosplay community, but because of society as a whole.  Honestly?  The people who give me the most crap for my weight, race, gender, and sexuality are people outside the cosplay/geek community.  Hell, election season showed a lot of men in suits telling me what rape really meant, or who I should marry, and things like that.  I’ve been told that I would be really cute “if I just lost some weight,” I’ve been told that I “sound white,” and have heard, “that’s gay,” on a daily basis thanks to retail.  All of this has been outside of cosplay.

It’s INSIDE the community where I’ve felt the most confident, have gotten the most compliments in regards of my appearance (even outside of cosplay this last Sunday I was told I looked pretty in a pair of jeans and a shirt).

I mean, I get where people are coming from with their warnings, because yes, those negative people do exist.  But honestly, most of us coming into this community have already faced negativity for our looks, and we’re coming here to have fun and be ourselves.  If you want to be positive towards us, don’t tell us to “be conscious of your body,” because… we already are.  We can’t help BUT be conscious of our bodies, not because you tell us to be, but because society tells us to be.  I can’t get a cute hoodie without paying a hell of a lot of money because places charge more for a bigger size.  Good luck for me ever finding a bra under $60.  Weight loss commercials run like political ads during elections.

And don’t talk to me about racism because even fucking Oprah was discriminated against recently.  Fucking.  Oprah.  And fuck, I’ve been with the same girl for 11 years and I JUST NOW have the option to marry her, in what is it now?  13 states or something?

If you really want to support us, offer compliments (real compliments don’t say them if you don’t mean them because WE WILL KNOW IF YOU ARE TALKING BULLSHIT because, trust me, we’ve heard it before).  We already know about the negative folks, the bashers, the “you’re too big to cosplay Sailor Moon” or “Sailor Venus isn’t black” and just… we get it.  We already know.  So don’t assume you’re doing us a favor by saying, “I am supportive of all cosplay I just want you to understand that there are some people who won’t support you because of your size,” or, “be careful if you weigh this much and want to cosplay this character not everyone will like it.”

The correct thing to say, if you really are supportive, is, “Do what you do and rock it.”
