Let me tell you a story. The day after Columbine, I was interviewed for the Tom Brokaw news program. The reporter had been assigned a theory and was seeking sound bites to support it. “Wouldn’t you say,” she asked, “that killings like this are influenced by violent movies?” No, I said, I wouldn’t say that. “But what about ‘Basketball Diaries’?” she asked. “Doesn’t that have a scene of a boy walking into a school with a machine gun?” The obscure 1995 Leonardo Di Caprio movie did indeed have a brief fantasy scene of that nature, I said, but the movie failed at the box office (it grossed only $2.5 million), and it’s unlikely the Columbine killers saw it.
The reporter looked disappointed, so I offered her my theory. “Events like this,” I said, “if they are influenced by anything, are influenced by news programs like your own. When an unbalanced kid walks into a school and starts shooting, it becomes a major media event. Cable news drops ordinary programming and goes around the clock with it. The story is assigned a logo and a theme song; these two kids were packaged as the Trench Coat Mafia. The message is clear to other disturbed kids around the country: If I shoot up my school, I can be famous. The TV will talk about nothing else but me. Experts will try to figure out what I was thinking. The kids and teachers at school will see they shouldn’t have messed with me. I’ll go out in a blaze of glory.”
In short, I said, events like Columbine are influenced far less by violent movies than by CNN, the NBC Nightly News and all the other news media, who glorify the killers in the guise of “explaining” them. I commended the policy at the Sun-Times, where our editor said the paper would no longer feature school killings on Page 1. The reporter thanked me and turned off the camera. Of course the interview was never used. They found plenty of talking heads to condemn violent movies, and everybody was happy.

standuseriggy asked: Dear past me,
Don’t try to be something you’re not. There’s nothing wrong with being geeky. Just because the girls around you are dating, and sleeping with boys, doesn’t mean you have to feel bad for not doing it, too. It’s great that you’re not doing it, because frankly, you’re not interested in those things. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to do homework, play video games, and watch DBZ. That is who you are. Later in life you’ll realize that there’s an entire community out there with people just like you, who will think you’re awesome for being you :)
Now, when you have you very first girl crush, DON’T PANIC! It’s all right to like girls, o.k.? Maybe you were never interested in sleeping with boys because you’ve liked girls all this time, who knows. But when you meet her, just go with it, you won’t regret it.
Also, follow your writing dreams. Just because your brother passed away doesn’t mean you need to change your dreams to being a doctor. You won’t be happy in that field, your heart will always go back to writing. Don’t let the words “writing isn’t a real job” scare you away. Let me tell you, writing is a lot harder than you think. There’s going to be challenges on the way, but in the end I feel that it will be worth it. That’s still a lesson I’m trying to learn myself, but I have a feeling that it will turn out well.
Don’t stop with your art. Don’t forget that you love to draw, and paint, and all of that stuff. It will take you places, it might take a while, but you will get somewhere with it. Remember when your mom and dad said to not waste your talent? LISTEN TO THEM! Don’t waste away in retail because you feel like its safe, don’t stay with it because it’s a job and “there’s no jobs available.” Don’t let yourself be miserable everyday. It’s possible to do what you love and be able to live comfortable with it. It won’t happen right away, but it will happen.
So stay geeky, stay positive, keep writing, and keep doing crafts.
Love,
Your future self :)

It’s been less than 24 hours and people are already blaming the CT shooting this morning on video games. Son of a bitch, not again.
all based off Fox News and there “investigations”
Hey guys, check out this article here: http://kotaku.com/5968683/mob-blames-mass-effect-for-school-shooting-is-embarrassingly-wrong/gallery/1 they aren’t even attacking the right guy.
I did have a rant on facebook about how the video game blame game needs to stop (especially since, you know, in Mass Effect you’re um… a good guy, so… what?), but I think this article sums it up.

This morning, from this article, 26 people were killed. 18 Children. Please, if you pray; pray for these families. It’s the Holidays, this shouldn’t be happening. Keep them in your thoughts.
So praying for the families… Some sick people don’t have a fear of goodness anymore, of a higher level of Right and Wrong. THIS IS WRONG, killing kids is WRONG. That people can even think of doing this kind of thing sickens me.
A rare, serious moment on my tumblr. Even if you don’t believe in a higher power and praying, just… take a moment to give your thoughts to the victims, families, people, just… everyone, period.
