“OH MY GOD FROZEN DISNEY ONLY EVER DOES MOVIES ABOUT WHITE PEOPLE THEY’RE SO RACIST I HATE THEM”
Disney only does movies about white people.
It’s disgusting

How they never have

any people of color

from any other cultures

And they totally glorify the white man

And totally marginalize their plights

And overall refuses to give children of color characters to relate to

Those racist bastards.
Oh look a couple of characters of color sprinkled in a sea of whiteness! Some even come with their own racial stereotypes! Good for you Disney! Good for you Disney Fans for finding these! Now us minorities will shut up with our scraps!
OMG 8 out of 53 movies this is great!!!
Disney fans out there trying it again.
wow, scraps is a really good way to put it.
i sighed while scrolling over this post.
Actually, I sighted the 8 movies I could think of off the top of my head ;D There’s more than just eight, but the point of the matter here isn’t about the number of POC represented but rather the fact that they are. The claim that POC have no place in Disney is outright bullshit; It’s just the ramblings of a angry tumblr user. While the number of white characters outweighs those of color, it does not invalidate the existence of those who are, nor the fact that number is growing. Another thing to note is that -while being white, there are many variants and different cultures in the white category- that have been represented, too. Just because a character is white does not mean they don’t have an ethnicity, a culture or are less of a person. Disney tends to take many of it’s film adaptations from European fairy tales, hence why Germany, France, Italy, ect have been the focus of their early work. After conquering many of the classic fairytales, Disney began to tackle it’s own takes on stories and that’s when we say them take different ethnic twists on things. ALSO, upon getting ownership of the Marvel franchise, DISNEY had made changes to casting within the Avengers/co series such as recasting white characters like War Machine/James to be POC instead of the original white characters depicted in the comics.
Furthermore, no one ever said Disney didn’t have a majority of white characters; That does not equate racism though; Many of the POC appearing in Disney movies have been doing so over the last 25 years; The company is making the effort to include other races because of the change in times and the idea that more people need some representations. Instead of throwing a tantrum over “NOT ENOUGH” why not celebrate the prevalence that POC are taking in Disney and the fact those numbers are GROWING? Does the feeling of blogging angerly and having a reason to yell make it worth ignoring the good in things? In fact, another thing to note is that -of all the companies that produce high budget children’s entertainment, Disney has represented the most varied number of ethnicities in their films-.
LET’S MAKE A LIST HERE IN WHICH POC ARE PRESENT AND HAVE MAJOR ROLES:
- Saludos Amigos
-Peter Pan
-The Jungle Book
- Aladdin
-Pocahontas
- The Hunchback of Notre Dame
- Mulan
- The Emperor’s New Groove
- Atlantis: The Lost Empire
- Lilo & Stitch
-Brother Bear
- The Princess and the Frog
That is ELEVEN of FIFTY THREE. Now, that sounds like a small number, but that’s TWENTY PERCENT. Twenty Percent of Disney’s movies feature POC as main characters, and considering that is a company that began production in 1937 and made 23 of their 53 movies BEFORE 1980, That’s not a bad fucking number.
The problem isn’t Disney or the lack of POC in their movies, it’s that people want a reason to be mad. People need to feel like there’s something to fight/boycott and blog about so they have some sense of importance in their lives.
Exactly this. The fact that I can walk into a store and see a person of color standing in the line up of Disney Princess is great. That wasn’t the case when I was a little girl, but now this generation of girls have that, and that’s amazing. It’s called progression. They’re making progress. They’re trying. No one said it would happen overnight, but at least they’re trying. When I cosplay as Tiana I get recognized just as quickly as any other Disney princess. People recognize her and love her, and that’s great.
Also, I’m going to say something that no one wants to admit to, but even when we do get a person of color, people complain about how that character is portrayed. So that makes it discouraging to even try, you know? For example:
Person A: Ugh the Disney princesses always wish on a star they never fight for what they want they need a prince to save them and they’re always white this needs to stop!
Disney: Here’s Tiana. She’s black, she doesn’t wish on a star, she knows that it takes hard work to get what she wants, and she gets it at the end of the movie. Also, her prince is working at her dream restaurant, she created it herself, with her own two hands, she worked hard, she did it. She’s not working at his place he’s working at her place she’s in charge. Isn’t that great?
Person A: Ugh why does the black princess have to work hard why can’t she wish for what she wants like the white princesses got to do that’s so not fair. Such a stereotype the black princess has to be strong and independent and not dream for her dreams to come true. And furthermore she was a frog the whole time so racist.
It’s a double-edged sword, and it gets frustrating to see this argument of, “We want more people of color,” then when a company makes an attempt it’s scrutinized and picked apart and apparently they’re doing it wrong. So you want them to try, but then you hate when they try.
