Women aren’t the only ones told to look a certain way

Hooray for the Male Body!

i would.

Except no-one expects men to look like CK models
popular media constantly shows fat/stupid men having “hot” wives

men are not constantly harassed on the street if they don’t fit the social norm of what is “attractive”

Men aren’t blamed for their sexual assault if they are “sexy”

Fuck you, OP

Shut the fuck up you big stupid idiot.

I approve of this post.

I’m sorry: “men are not constantly harassed on the street if they don’t fit the social norm of what is “attractive””? I don’t fit what is considered to be an ‘attractive man’ (probably because people perceive me as somewhat androgynous) and I’ve been asked many times in quite rude and demeaning ways whether I’m male or female. Someone even said “was that a bitch or a boy?”. Of course people harass men who aren’t considered “attractive”. I think it’s very narrow minded of someone to think that not a single man is harassed because of what he looks like.

Those guys are actually not that bad-looking. If chubby women can look beautiful, then chubby men can look handsome

Also as far as sexual assault goes, no one barely even talks about it happening to a man.  At least we talk about it with women.  At least it’s made visible with women.  Men are actually told not to say anything, period, because, “What man would complain about a woman doing this to them?”  "What man would complain about being raped by a woman?“  "What man doesn’t want it?”  And if it’s a man doing it to another man, he’s shamed into not saying anything.  "Do you really want to tell people you were fucked by a man?“

The point of this post is to show that the expectations of society work both ways.  Because it does.  And you just proved it with the "except men aren’t treated like this.”  At least we know that women have ridiculous expectations, whereas with men we assume that things are simple, there are no expectations from them at all.  They can just walk around and be men, that’s it.  Now I’m not saying that women don’t have it hard, but don’t just assume that there is zero expectations of men.  That’s not how this works.  That’s not how equality wants.  We want to be equal, not, “shut up you don’t get to weigh in on this because you’re a man.”  Men have feelings too, and the assumption that they don’t is a problem.

Also, what makes you think that just because the chubby guy gets the girl on T.V. that he has it so easy in real life?  You think they’re just funny all the time and are able to bag a girl with the power of their humor?  You think plus sized men don’t get made fun of?  You think they don’t get teased?  If you want us to not believe everything we see on T.V. in regards to women and body image and things like that, the same goes for men too.

Body image discrimination isn’t sexist, it effects both sides, it’s just that we usually hear about one side (female) more.

What the fuck? Whitewashing? It’s a danish fairy tale! You can’t just throw in diversity for the sake of it. It has to make sense, thats like if people were like “Why are there only Chinese people in Mulan?” Because it takes place in fucking China before anyone immigrated there!

THANK YOU

THANK.

“typical light hair, fair skinned, blue eyes" The only other Disney princesses that fits that description all the way would be Cinderella and Aurora. The only other one close is Rapunzel. Disney does extremely well with making the animated princesses fit the time period and area they are from. Let me show you a thing.

Alright this is Snow White. The whole reason this is her name is because her skin was as white as the fucking snow. She had hair as black as a raven. And lips as red as a rose. Snow White was originally a GERMAN fairytale. Ya know what color they are in Germany? White….

Now this bitch right here is Cinderella. This movie was made in 1950. Ya know what was going on in 1950? Segregation. So I doubt that in 1950 they would make some black fairytale princess considering Walt Disney was white and all the employees at Disney were white, and I’m sorry but in the 1950’s all the white people were racists. Yes, Walt Disney was fucking racist. But that’s because of when he grew up and how things were. He was actually a pretty loving and kind man and I’m sure that he would’ve had an open mind to ending segregation if he had grew up different. FYI Cinderella is French. French people be white.

This chick right here. Her name is Aurora. Her movie was made in 1969. There were still racist little bastards then. But ya know what, she’s also freaking French. And in her original fairytale her hair was the color of sunshine gold, and lips that shamed the red red rose.

Now meet Ariel. She is often times many people’s favorite cause she’s fun and quirky and her hair looks like a fucking fire truck. Her fairytale is Danish. Danish people are white. The Danish fairytale though? It’s actually based off of stories sailors told of seeing this girl with bright red hair and the tail of a fish. Idk, but have you ever seen a naturally red headed black woman. Cause I haven’t….

Now Belle here is the frenchiest of the French. Her story is actually based in France. Not just a nice fairytale that was made in France. Again, French people are white. But you see light hair on her. No. She is brunette! And she has brown eyes. Nuff said.

Now this…. this is Jasmine. She is not white, she does not have light hair, and she does not have light eyes. She is brown. And beautifully so. And she’s not so sweet and fragile either. She is independent and don’t need no man.She is Arabic and she looks like it. I don’t see any white washing here. See this is where white washing would ACTUALLY come into play. If they made Princess Jasmine, based off of Princess Badroulbadour from an Arabic folk tale, and made her white. A white girl in Agrabah. Nope.

My personal favorite. Pocahontas. Again. No white washing. She is nice and brown, and has nice Indian features. Thing about her? She was a real lady. In fact her sequel actually told her story better than the first one.

Meet mulan. She’s Chinese. She saved China. Nuff said.

This lovely lady is Tiana. She made a lot of ground as being the first black Disney Princess. She was from New Orleans. She’s american. This movie was based in the 1920’s and they did her right because she was a waitress, working 3 jobs just to make a few dollars a day. She lived in the slums/the ghetto with all the other colored folk. They kept it right to the time period they were representing but they also made her fa-boo!

Now this chicky is my girl punzy. She is the first Disney Princess since 1991 that was white. I think 20 years time is a good amount of time to bring in another white Princess. Disney had wanted to do Rapunzel for a long time. She’s one of the classic fairytale princesses. Everyone know who this chick was, but there was no Disney movie about her. The reason why they didn’t she make her movie in the 90’s was because she was white. She was just another, golden haired, fair skinned, damsel in distress. I am soooo happy they waited on this one too. Cause after being in the works for so long they took this story about a chick with long hair being rescued by a Prince, and they made her this barefoot, rebellious, bad-ass, sweetheart, that was magical and already a Princess. In fact her “prince” wasn’t a prince. He was a thief. And the coolest thing, so that she wasn’t just a typical blonde princess, they cut off her hair and it turned brown. So now she’s this edgy but sweet brunette, short-haired, girl. Also, the original fairytale is German, so Disney stayed true to it’s roots and kept her in a German setting.

This is Princess Merida. She is Scottish. Technically white. But still not just some American accent, blonde, white girl. She made a big leap in the Princess world because unlike all the others who are all strong too, she didn’t even find love in the movie. Who knows, maybe they’ll make a sequel a few years later where she’s older and more grown up and she gets married. Fun fact, Brave is loosely based around Scottish folklore of King Fergus.

So yeah, white washing would be if they made the beautiful ethnic ladies here just white. Alot of fairytales come from mainly white countries. Disney is just trying to tell a good story. Maybe they should look more into some Arabic fairytales, maybe some African ones. But all they’re doing is staying true to stories and lands.

I love you.

OKAY

THIS HAS COME ACROSS MY DASH LIKE 8 TIMES AND EVERYONE HAS BEEN UNRESERVEDLY AGREEING WITH THE COMMENTS AND I JUST NEED TO

-deep breath-

I agree that ‘whitewashing’ was not the correct term to use, because that refers to making characters who are already not white, white.

However

THERE WERE PEOPLE OF COLOR IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE.

THERE WERE, IN FACT, A LOT OF VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE OF COLOR IN MEDIEVAL EUROPE.

THE FACT THAT THE SETTING IS A FANTASY VERSION OF A MEDIEVAL EUROPEAN COUNTRY DOES NOT EXCUSE A LACK OF DIVERSITY AND WE NEED TO STOP SAYING IT DOES.

also i’m p sure medieval europe didn’t have ridiculously punchable animated snowmen but that sure didn’t stop Disney from putting one in the movie

THANK YOU FOR THE LAST COMMENT.

Look, people—so long as Disney continues to NOT look into stories/fairy tales/legends and pointedly AVOID having most of their lineup be anything other than Caucasian royalty with some token exceptions, it will be ONE BILLION PERCENT OKAY for people to re-imagine them as being more diverse.

Fuck you and good night.

Also there are black French people… like I see what the poster was trying to do but there are black French people.  Not all French people have white skin.  Black is a skin color and there are a lot of ethnic groups that have it.  I just made this point a little while ago in regards to Sailor Moon and how someone thought an artist was making her black and taking away the fact that she’s Japanese.  There can be black Japanese people.  Hell, in the manga, Sailor Pluto has dark skin.  I think people are getting "skin color” and “ethnicity” mixed up.  There is a difference.

Also you can’t say that there’s no black French people then say “Tiana is from New Orleans” in the same sentence because isn’t there a French Quarter in New Orleans?

Updates ^^

Good morning, everyone!  There are a lot more of you than there was yesterday.  Hi!  Here’s a few cosplay related updates from me  :)

1.  I get to write a cosplay article for xoJane and I’m pretty excited.  It’ll focus on how to be encouraging towards plus sized cosplayers and how saying things like, “people might not want to see you dressed as that character because of your size” is not being helpful.  We get that you’re trying to warn the cosplayer of the bullies out there, but to be honest, from what I’ve seen/experienced plus sized cosplayers (or diverse cosplayers in general) already know that the bullies are out there and are cautiously going into cosplay anyway, so saying things like that just makes them even more worried.

2.  I’m pretty much going to do Princess Serenity next year, for sure.  She wasn’t on my list before but she is now thanks to this amazing fanart.  Also going to do steampunk femme Kid Flash and found some awesome fabric for it.  My wifey and I are talking about a third costume at the moment.  I’m not going to lie, I didn’t really think I’d be cosplaying this much let alone have so many people interested in me cosplaying, but now that I’m doing it I don’t plan on stopping anytime soon.  If you’re looking at me as a role model for plus sized cosplay, then that’s amazing. If you’ve been debating on whether you should cosplay or not and my cosplay has someone pushed you to take the plunge, then that’s incredible.  That really makes me happy.  I never thought of myself as a cosplay role model, but that’s pretty cool  :)

Someday, I want to do a cosplay calender, with all sorts of diverse cosplayers.  Plus sized, different ethnicities, lgbt, men (that sounds weird but the two big cosplay calenders I know about do not have a single man in it and I KNOW they are out there cosplaying too, even if “Heroes of Cosplay” says that they’re cosplay is “boring”).  It’s just a dream for now, but who knows what the future will hold.  I mean I love “Cosplay for a Cause” and Yaya’s calender and stuff, but just… a calender with a variety of cosplayers would rock.  Or, you know, cosplayers who look more like me.

3.  We’ve signed up for three conventions already next year and are just waiting to hear back.  This is Anime Milwauke, Anime Detour, and Naka-Kon.  We are also looking at Anime Central again but the artist alley isn’t up yet.  We will also be looking at CONvergence, but we’re not sure if we’re going to be dealers or not.  We might just go to that one just to go the first year.  We also want to look at a big, far away con, in the likes of Otakon or something like that. Just take a trip and go for it.

In regards to conventions, I’m always looking for suggestions on where to go.  Now that my wifey has weekends off, we can look at a lot of conventions because it won’t use nearly as much PTO.  At the conventions we’ll be there in cosplay, and have a table in artist alley.  Next year, we hope to have our books there.  Our cover artist was at a con with us last weekend and the covers generated a lot of buzz, so we hope to actually have physical copies of the books.  At the moment, our publisher has been merged with a larger publisher, which seems to be a good thing, so far, since now there’s more resources at our disposal  :)

That’s everything.  If you just started following me, hello and welcome! During that whole mess yesterday I broke 600 followers, so yay!

So that’s really a day? I had honestly never heard of that. How do people agree on such things if a lot of the community is behind secretive? :0

Just because some people are still in the closet doesn’t mean that we’re not aware of the community  :)  It’s not really being secretive, not to me.  It’s being worried about what others think.  Like, for example, in college when I was on campus I was pretty much out?  Like I didn’t broadcast it but I talked about my partner.  But when I went back home, I was straight again, because I was worried about telling them.

Honestly, I just heard about this day last year.  Coming out can be pretty scary, depending on the situation you’re in.  Even if you’re in a good situation, there’s so many horror stories with it or off-handed things people say that can make you wary about doing it.  I remember in like, college, we were watching “In and Out,” which is about a guy getting married but then he realizes he’s gay.  Anyhow, one of my aunts asked my dad, “What if she were gay?”  And he flat out said, “She’s not.”  At the time, I wasn’t with my partner, but stuff like that sticks with you when you do realize you’re gay, or trans, or bi, or asexual, or anything.  In fact, part of me thinks that the hardest person to come out to sometimes is yourself.  I flat out denied it, to the point of ignoring the girl I liked (who is now my partner).  I denied it because being gay wasn’t something that was really talked about.  My dad flat out said “no she’s not” just from watching a movie, the thought of telling him that I was gay?  No.

But more on that on the actual day itself, that’s… an interesting story.

National Coming Out Day

So October 11th is National Coming Out Day.  I had a thought.  If you need someone to come out to, anon or not, feel free to send me a message  :)  Coming out isn’t easy, and I definitely plan on sharing my story on Friday, but I thought I would put this out there now.  I have a couple of different coming out stories, from my parents, to my partner’s parents, to friends, and just… yeah, I feel like everyone had a different reaction so it’s kind of a different story each time.  Some good.  Some not so good.  But all important to me in some way.
