2012 US Gold Medalist Matt Grevers || Makoto Tachibana
Mens 4x100 Medley Relay

I knew this looked familiar...

Yeah, tell me more about how this series was poorly researched.

See.  This is why Free! is so wonderful.  Sure there’s the cute boys and the subtext, but it’s also a show that did research and paid attention.  Not only did it end up having an engaging story, but when it came to the swimming parts, it was actually realistic.  It didn’t rely on its eye candy and subtext. It’s swimming, so you’re going to get a swimming show.  Swimming isn’t in the background and there’s no moment where actual swimmers in the fandom were like, “lol omg that is not how swimming works at all you didn’t do your homework at all.”

In fact, I’ve seen a lot of posts on tumblr like, “OMG THIS IS JUST HOW COMPETITIONS WORK,” and, “Wow when they make the exchange it’s dead on,” or, “when they turn in the water it’s perfect.”  Even little comments, like Rin saying, “they’re out of shape,” and the fandom being like, “lol whatever Rin these boys are hot,” then someone pointing out, “… actually he’s right, look at how swimmers look, they are actually out of shape compared to him.”  You can even see it with the boys, they run around for a bit and sometimes they’re out of breath.  Not Rei though, because come on he ran track, and not Rin because he jogs like all the time.

Nagisa running with Rei?  He was out of breath.  Even them running up the stairs you could see Makoto out of breath, or Haru running around looking for Rin.  Just because they’re pretty doesn’t mean they’re as fit as some other characters.  Attractive people with some muscle (or who are just skinny) can be out of shape if it’s not done constantly.  Rei is amazing at running, but when he was learning to swim he looked so, so tired.  But get him sprinting on the beach and he’s a pro.

But most of all I appreciate that the power of friendship didn’t mean victory.  Sure they trained a hell of a lot, but they ALL lost their meets. Come on, they trained for what, 30 days or something?  Not to mention that they had to take time out to teach Rei how to swim.  Of course there’s people better, particularly the captain of Rin’s team (he’s the captain of a power school of course he’s good).  And yeah they won the relay together, but individually they lost (and the relay relies on teamwork, which they nailed).

Alsoooo, I know you're involved in the LGBT community and stuff and I was just curious on your opinion of like, main characters who are transgender (not sure if I'm using the right term??) or something of the like. The main character of my 2nd series (sequel to the ones I'm writing now) is gonna be a female who wants to be a male, but it's in a fantasy/medieval-ish setting, so I don't know how I'm gonna work that out...xP

I would love to see more transgender main characters.  There’s a series that’s supposed to come out on the CW with a lead transgender character, which I am cautiously optimistic about (cautious because CW is hit or miss).  We actually have a trans character coming up in our book series.  We plan on doing a lot of research going in, because we don’t want to misrepresent anyone.  We have a good friend who is actually in transition right now (male to female) and she’s been more than willing to talk to us when we reach our character.  The last thing I want to do is misrepresent an underrepresented group.

This is a random anime example, but look into Grell from Black Butler.  It’s Victorian era, but Grell is canonly a man who wants to be a woman.  The creator did interviews with her characters and Grell actually said something along the lines of thinking God made a mistake in making “her” a man, and Grell always refers to herself as a lady.  She also wants a family and children.  Of course, the 1800s don’t really have the resources for such a thing (I think?  I’m fairly certain they don’t, but that doesn’t mean that trans people didn’t exist, or maybe even extreme measures were taken?  I think you can pull this off in your book, you just need to do research).

NO WHAT THE FRICK WHY WOULD I CHANGE MY MIND like you just seem like a really chill and accepting/caring person and Idek you're just really awesome. ALSO WE BOTH WRITE AND YEAH.

Writing buds FTW!  And yes I am accepting and caring but I am not chill like never watch shit with me ever ask anyone I will scream and curse and cry not even kidding.  Like the last three episodes of Madoka I threatened to kill my wifey for making me watch the goddamn series.  Then I scream every time I see the “to be continued” screen from Attack on Titan.  And omg, Free, let me tell you a thing.  I thought it would be a simple break to ease my mind after AoT but no, nooooooooooo, fucking swimming boys!  >.<

If I met you: I'd give you a hug because you're a really super cool person and both my boyfriend and I really respect you ;v;

R-respect, really?  Um… wow  *blush*  That… are you sure?  I mean… there’s still time to change your mind, honest.  Then again I guess I’m not spazzing about Free! anymore so maybe my blog isn’t as random as usual.  Though I am watching Watamote so I’m sure there will be spazzing over that soon.

GameInformer took points off of X and Y’s review score because it ‘still feels like a Pokemon game’

Well what the fuck do they expect it to feel like

grand theft auto 5, maybe?

O.K. Not gonna lie.  I haven’t actually gotten into the Pokemon games (got Nintendo handhelds real late and such), but… really?  I mean… “it still feels like a Pokemon game,” just… uh… it… it IS a Pokemon game.  What does that mean?  You still go around and catch little monsters in balls, right?  That is what Pokemon is, right?  The only way for it to not feel like that is to take that away, so… uh…

I mean that would be like, “Mortal Kombat is good but… it still feels like Mortal Kombat because of the blood and head removal at the touch of a button,” but… that… is the point, right?  People pick Mortal Kombat up wanting, well… a Mortal Kombat game.  Same with Pokemon.  Everyone is buying it so they can play a… Pokemon game.  Right?

Because I'm curious... Dear Santa,

LOL!

Dear Santa,

It’s a bit too early to ask for any sort of Christmas wish, but if you can make sure that the end of the year goes better than last year (unemployed with no book aspects and two cats passing away back to back and absolutely no money not even unemployment because it took forever to process and my wifey worked a crap ton of overtime just so we’d be o.k.) that would be great.  I mean of course I want SUPER AWESOME BOOK SUCCESS AND STUFF, but I know I have to work at that myself.  So just… no dying pets around the holidays, and not too much money stress and life stress, please.

And maybe like, a release date for Attack on Titan dub so I can look forward to a box set.

Or like, Free! being licensed.

Maybe some Persona 5 news or Arena 2 U.S. release date?  Or even a release date to the new Guilty Gear.

Oh, and entrance into all the cons we want to go to next year.  That too.

Is that too much?

O.K., maaaaaybe some holiday book success magic  ^^

K, now I’m done  :)  Though since Christmas isn’t until December I still have time to think  ^^
