Hey everyone, check it out!  This is for the short story I wrote in Dreamspinner Press’ upcoming sports anthology.  It’ll go on pre-sale next week, so I’ve been given permission to share the cover image and the story blurb.

Lukis Singleton’s once-popular sports column is fading fast, thanks to the terrible track record of the local football team. In an attempt to save the column, Lukis’s editor, John, decides he needs to go in a different direction. Video games are all the rage these days, so John insists that sending Lukis to a huge video-game tournament in Los Angeles will shake up his current readers and bring in new ones. Lukis isn’t thrilled about reporting on games with impossible powers or gamers who still live in Mom’s basement, but then he meets a tempting flaw in the gaming stereotypes of unwashed man-children. Aaron Sanders is a gorgeous breath of fresh air at the tournament who takes Lukis’s less-than-stellar view of gamers and turns it on its head, leaving Lukis to wonder if it might be worth being Aaron’s player two.

It was a ton of fun writing this.  There are quite a few geeky nods all throughout the story, from Marvel vs. Capcom, to Street Fighter, and even some Persona 4 Arena.  Fighting games are one of my favorite video game genres, so as soon as I saw “sports theme” I thought “fighting game tournament.”

Lukis is the naysayer, the “games are stupid” character.  But Aaron is all “games are awesome” and breaks all of Lukis’ stereotypes since he’s attractive and social.  The main point of this story is to show that us gamers aren’t just a bunch of anti-social children who can’t function, who still live with mom, and who waste their lives with a controller in their hand.  There’s so much more to video games, especially in this day and age, and on top of the gay romance is the theme of, “Don’t make assumptions about people because of what they do.  Don’t make assumptions about something until you try it yourself.”

I’ll post a link when the pre-sales start.  Until then, enjoy this snippet  :)

On top of my book “Treat Me Kindly,” there’s a short story coming soon! Remember to follow my writing blog for up-to-date information  :)  And yeah, Persona 4 fans you read that write, there’s a nod to the game in the story along with a bunch of other fighting games  ^^  I just couldn’t hep myself!

UNPOPULAR OPINION CHALLENGE!

2. A selection of musical artists you do not care for.

This is kinda tough since I don’t listen to too much “popular” music.  Most artists I stop liking are because the radio plays them way, way too much.  Like “Fun.”  They sound great, but omg every time I turn on the radio it’s the same song.  I know they have more than one, but it’s the same one!

4.
 A hobby you “don’t get”.

I probably shouldn’t judge too much since my own hobbies probably look weird, lol.  A lot of times it’s something that I’m not into, but I get?  Like, sports fanatics.  I grew up with a football/basketball fan of a mom.  I’m from Chicago, and once upon a time the Bulls won a whole lot, and I remember it was fun to celebrate even if I’m not a sports person.

Oh wait!  Just thought of something.  One thing I don’t get (which I’m not sure if this is a hobby) is like, people who like to do dangerous things.  You know, sky diving, and the sort of thing that can get you killed if you’re not careful.  Or chasing tornadoes, or looking for paranormal things.  Just… yeah, no thanks.

6. Something in school you really liked doing that everyone else bitched over.

Homework.  No, seriously, in high school I was suuuuuuuch a nerd. Math was my favorite.  You would think I’d say Art, right, with all of my crafting?  But… Algebra and Trigonometry, just… I was all over it.  Always had my homework done, always got good grades.  I was at the top of my class.

8. Popular video games that make you go “meh”.

Call of Duty or war shooters in general.  There’s just so many of them, and there’s this thing I have with games that come out every year (Madden, for example) that just… I can’t get excited.  It’s like, “Oh great a new one… I’ll see you with upgrades next year.”  There was this period of time (not sure if it’s still the case since I’m not at GameStop anymore) where there was some sort of Call of Duty every year.  And I swear, no one cared about the story, they just wanted to play online.  And just… I need a good story.  It doesn’t have to be stellar, but… something that makes me care for the characters.  And the only thing I’d hear about with CoD is online, zombies, and more online.  So… yeah.  It’s not my thing.  I don’t care if other people like it because you can like what you like, but I won’t be playing it.

10. A sport you don’t like, for whatever reason.

I think baseball is boring to watch, along with tennis and golf.  My mom was football and basketball so even if I’m not really a sports person, I can watch a game and be interested.

Unless of course if it’s an anime version with cute boys in swim trunks?  Har har har…

12. Television programs you love but have gotten shit for liking.

All right guys, here is my bad confession.  I love terrible reality shows.  Not like Survivor, but like… Hell’s Kitchen, and Top Model (at least I use to love Top Model not so much anymore).  I have no idea WHY I’m into these shows.  Just… I guess it’s the trainwreck?  Even now, as I write this, season three of Hell’s Kitchen is playing in the background.  It’s my background noise as I craft.

I also love Maury.  I… I don’t know why.  I really don’t.  It’s a terrible show.  It really is.  But… just, I will watch the hell out of it.

14. A hobby you have/find interesting that other people bother you over/make fun of.

Actually… no one really bothers me over the things I do.  The people in my life are supportive over me crafting, or my anime and video games.  If anything, it would be people outside my circle at like, GameStop, “Dur hur hur do you really play games?”  Those people aren’t in my life anymore, so whatever.  I mean, I guess my mom use to give me crap for being so geeky, but it wasn’t really serious?  Like she doesn’t care.  She hates anime, but she doesn’t care that I’m into it.  She loves my quirkiness  :)

16.
Something in school you hating doing and it felt like everyone else loved.

Everyone around me seemed to be dating.  It just… wasn’t high on my list of things to do.  But girls were dating and having sex, and I just… I mean I was curious, but I wasn’t upset that I didn’t have those things.  I DID have a boyfriend eventually, when I was 17 (last year of high school) but before that I… I dunno, I mean for a while I think I thought there was something wrong with me?  Because why was everyone else boy crazy and I wasn’t?  And I don’t think it was because, “Oh I like girls hahahahaha,” I just hadn’t met someone I really, really wanted to be with.  I had crushes, but I wasn’t one of the “hot popular” girls so it would never go anywhere.

18. A selection of video games that you enjoy that perhaps you really shouldn’t.

Hrm… I… I don’t know?  My collection is on display so it’s not like there’s a game I’m hiding from people.  There’s some “terrible” games that amuse me, like “Chaos Legion” for PS2.  The story is shit, but it’s fun hack and slash, so I have it.  "Rule of Rose" has hoooooorrible gameplay, but… the story is interesting.  There are games I have just to finish off the collection.  I own “Guilty Gear Overture” for example but I don’t like the game at all.  I also own the “Yu Yu Hakusho” PS2 game which is also terrible.  And I have my crazy franchises, like “Katamari” or the Japanese “Elite Beat Agents” and things like that.

As much crap as I give some things (like the Nintendo Wii or Square Enix) I can’t deny that I did enjoy them for a period of time.  Part of me is still hopeful for Square Enix to do something that amazes me again, they haven’t really blown me away in a long, long time, so… I’m just waiting.  As for the Wii, it was super casual yes, but I’d be lying if I didn’t say I abused my poor Wii during Smash Brothers and other first party games where I would STAY UP ALL NIGHT PLAYING.  Nintendo is good at that when they actually try.

20. Free rant on whatever grinds your gears at the moment.

I do that all the time  ^^  Well actually… I have one.  I wish people would stop, you know, ship wars.  They’re pointless.  There’s always going to be people who don’t see things your way, there’s no need to get upset.  There’s also no need to bash people for liking a certain ship.  I don’t know how this keeps coming up in the Kanji and Naoto ship.  It seems like every couple of weeks there’s a post/confession or whatever of, “I don’t like Kanji and Naoto.”  That’s fine.  You don’t have to like them  :)  But then the fans of the pairing flip out.  I find this interesting, because I don’t think I’ve seen this done so fiercely as it is for Kanji and Naoto?  Like I see so many Kanji and Naoto fans bashing Souji and Naoto, but I don’t see Souji and Naoto fans biting back?  Like there’s this long list of reasons I’ve seen to hate Souji and Naoto, but I haven’t really looked in the Naoto tag to see a Souji and Naoto fan going, “OH YEAH?!  LET ME SHOW YOU A THING!”

It’s so weird, because the confession post will be so simple for Kanji and Naoto, “They’re not my cup of tea,” then it’s like, “OH YEAH LET ME SHOW YOU A THING!”  You… don’t have to do that.  There’s evidence to support both sides.  It’s fandom, not everyone is going to see your ship.  There’s no need to research evidence to back up your pairing.  You like them because, well, you like them  :)

Now if someone directly messages you like, “You’re stupid for liking these two,” or makes a post like, “Kanji and Naoto fans are stupid,” then… that’s a bit different.  You’re free to not like the pairing, but that doesn’t mean you bash the fans that do.  The thing I’m talking about are those simple post of, “I don’t care for this pairing,” not something like, “Ugh fans of this thing are sooooooooooo annoying like shut up already dayum!”

#as much as i love lady gaga this is kinda true

Except it’s not true whatsoever. Lady Gaga is openly bisexual. So, she does belong in our community, and this guy’s bisexual erasure is fucking awful. Also - if you’re going to dismiss Lady Gaga as a gay icon because you think she’s a “straight white woman” (which is, yet again, false because Lady Gaga is bisexual), Kelly Rowland can be dismissed as well because she’s actually heterosexual.

Not only that, but saying things about how she doesn’t know what it’s like to be bullied because she’s a “white woman” is fucking bullshit. People get bullied all the time for a multitude of reasons, bullying isn’t something that’s exclusive to oppressed groups. Not to mention that women still *ARE* an oppressed group!

And while she may not be a spokesperson in the eyes of this guy, this guy also doesn’t speak for the entire LGBTQ+ community, so he needs to sit down and shut up before acting like his word is law.

White gay males are the largest population in the LGBTQ+ community, they hold the majority - but they don’t get to make the rules. They’re not the only ones oppressed, and they don’t even have it the worst. Try talking to any trans* people, or queer PoCs, or intersex and genderqueer people, or even most bisexual, asexual, or pansexual people. If you want to talk about marginalization and oppression - talk to them. In comparison, gay white males have it easy.

I’m not dismissing the issues that us white gay males deal with, because we still deal with oppression from a multitude of sources, but if we’re going to compare - then white gay males come out ahead in the “most privilege” race.

I’m not saying that there isn’t valid reason for disliking Lady Gaga - but this argument is terrible and doesn’t make a single valid point.

#REBLOGGING FOR THE COMMENTARY#I WANNA PUNCH THIS ASSHOLE IN THE FACE#ALSO NOTICE HOW HE ADDS PENIS AS A REQUIREMENT TO EVERYTHING#EVEN A LESBIAN NEEDS A PENIS APPARENTLY#SHUT THE FUCK UP MAN

FUCKING THANK YOU GOD BLESS YOU I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR SOMEONE TO SAY ALL OF THIS UGHGHHHHHHHHHHH I HATE IT EVERY TIME THIS GIFSET COMES ON MY DASH

reblogging for the commentary. Thank you all for saying what I had been wanting to say but couldn’t find the words for.

I’m going to add to this, because it needs to be said, because I fit in a crap ton of “oppressed” groups.  And as much as I absolutely love having the support from other plus sized/LGBTQ/black/female/geeks, you know what absolutely feels amazing?

WHEN PEOPLE IN THE “MAJORITY” ARE ON MY SIDE, TOO!

Events like PRIDE are to show that, hey, we are here, and be happy with who you are and, you know, for people who are the “majority” to accept the fact that we are here.  HOW FUCKING BACKWARDS IS IT TO BASH SOMEONE WHO YOU FEEL DOESN’T BELONG IN THE GROUP?!  ARE YOU REALLY GOING TO BASH SOMEONE SUPPORTING YOU BECAUSE YOU FEEL LIKE THEY DON’T FIT?!  Besides the fact that, as the commenter said, Lady Gaga is bi so she “fits,” but let’s say she were a straight white woman.

THAT’S EVEN BETTER!  BECAUSE THAT MEANS SOMEONE OUTSIDE THE GROUP IS ON OUR SIDE!  ISN’T THAT WHAT WE WANT?!  Don’t we want the ones who are still bellyaching about LGBTQ people to, you know, stop fusing about it and let us be happy?  ISN’T THAT WHAT WE WANT?!  So, you know, you would WANT THE STRAIGHT WHITE WOMAN TO COME OUT AND SAY, “ACCEPT THEM!”  Instead, this guy is busy complaining.  Complaining!  Are you fucking kidding me?!  THE MORE PEOPLE ON MY SIDE THE BETTER!  You all bitch and complain about being bullied, what the hell do you think you’re doing right now?!

It’s like… being in a burning building and being picky about who comes to save you.  "Sorry, rescuer, you don’t know what it feels like to run away from a fire, go and get a fire fighter who’s been trapped in a burning building.“

Sorry, just… this fucking irritates me beyond belief.  "Ugh I wish people would just let me be me,” then someone comes out and says, “Hey, I want you to be you, you’re beautiful the way you are.”  The response SHOULD NOT BE, “… no you’re a straight white woman you shouldn’t be saying that because you don’t get it.”  Let.  People.  Support.  You.  Because.  We.  Want.  Support.  Do.  NOT.  BE.  PICKY.  ABOUT.  WHERE.  THAT.  SUPPORT.  COMES.  FROM!

Well, to all the straight white women out there, from a plus sized black geeky woman who’s been dating a woman for 11 years:  KEEP SINGING FOR ME, O.K?!  I NEED YOUR SUPPORT AND LOVE GETTING IT!  This sentiment goes to all of the white/straight/you know what who gives a fuck what your gender/race/sexual preference is, as long as you’re supporting the cause then you’ll get a smile from me.

Snap. I would totally do this. Hell, I probably HAVE done this in my GameStop days.
