Planeswalker Stockings!
So the story behind these is that an old coworker of mine was rediscovered many years later and opened a tabletop gaming store with food in Minnesota called Your Mom’s Basement. The place rocks!! The fact that he’s gone so far as to open his own business and such is hugely inspiring so I keep wanting to make things for the place. He requested, for Christmas, a set of Christmas stockings to decorate the store’s fireplace with from Magic the Gathering. He gave me the character names and here’s what I came up with ^_^
Check out these new Christmas stockings snowtigra made for our friend who runs the tabletop gaming shop, Your Mom’s Basement here in Minnesota. Based on Magic the Gathering :)
Hi hi!
My otp: I was about to say Souji/Rise, but honestly… I feel like the only reason I dated her in the game was because a) I couldn’t make myself date Naoto because I wanted her with Kanji, b) Chie and Yukiko belong together. That and her options were, “Hug her,” or, “Leave her crying,” which… come on, really? It’s not like I don’t like Rise, I love her (more than I thought I would), I just don’t want to pair her with Souji when my reasoning was essentially, “Because everyone else I like was taken.”
When I think about it, my OTP is an OT3: Kanji, Rise, and Naoto. Like I can’t pair her with just Kanji, or just Naoto, I need all three together. I read a fic (always a fic!) where it was something like, she was TRYING to get Kanji and Naoto together, but sort of ended up falling for both of them, and it just… worked. I really like the dynamic of the three of them. Kanji is loud and unsure, Naoto is always trying to be logical, and Rise is able to balance those characteristics and hold them together.
My most hated pairing: None :) I guess one thing I do not like to see in Rise fic is when she’s like, a slut, or just really sexual. Like, I feel like that misses the entire point of her character. That’s what people THINK they see when they see her, but that’s not her at all. It’s the idol image, and I thought the game portrayed it really well (and made me think of the idols we have in our own culture). So happy, or sexy, seemingly ditzy, and just… is that the real person? With Rise the answer is no. Even with small moments like the breast exams, she’s like, “My agency insisted that I say they’re bigger,” like… it was a quick line, but it’s so telling! She was whatever they wanted her to be, so when I see fics or comments or whatever where she’s like, sex star number one, all I can do is sigh because she’s much more than that.
My unusual otp: Urm… I… don’t know. Actually, I did – yeah yeah, read a fic – where it was an OT4 with all the girls, and it was really well written and sweet. Otherwise, I guess Yosuke and Rise would be my unusual OTP. Like he crushes on her for the wrong reasons, but we already know that Yosuke is all show and I think, if they were alone together, he would have no idea what to do. He doesn’t know what to do with a girl but he thinks he does, and Rise doesn’t know what to do with a boy but she’s supposed to, and just… they’d sit there and be awkward, PROBABLY even more awkward than Kanji and Naoto, and it would be really sweet, the two of them actually being their unsure selves.
My crossover otp: I actually don’t have one. For real this time. I really don’t have one. I did see a request on the kinkmeme a while back with Misa from Death Note and Rise, which I think would make for interesting conversation. Both of them are the series pretty girls, and are seemingly the “useless” ones, or “stupid” ones. You know, Rise is the healer who just stands back and watches, and Misa is just some toy Light can use, but in the end they’re both really interesting characters who are more than what they seem to be.
My brotp/friendship otp: Probably Souji, actually, I can see her talking to him about her feelings for Kanji/Naoto and wondering, how the hell do I make this work with the both of them?
Character headcanon: I think Rise is one of the strongest characters in the game, and she probably suffers the most. Mostly because she sits back and watches as everyone fights. I can only imagine her reactions to moments like, them fighting Namatame, and them turning against Souji. Or fighting Izanami and being sucked in by the shadows. Having to watch your friends die? Only being able to stand there and watch? I think the “useless” stereotypes works both ways for her: in and out of battle. In battle, she just stands there, right? Clearly she doesn’t do anything. Outside of battle she’s “Risette,” just some pretty popstar to stare at. But deep down there’s more to Rise, and I really REALLY like what they did in Golden, how it’s like, “O.K. she does more than just analyze enemies, look at all of that potential!”
As far as like, pairing headcanon, deep down, I think Rise was infatuated with Naoto, especially after finding out her secret. Someone her age doing so much, and a female? The media portrays Naoto with respect, and I think Rise sort of wants to make her realize that even as a female she’s cool, dragging her into the hotsprings, forcing her not to hide, things like that. As for Kanji, I think the fic I read explained it best: trying to get him to finally talk to Naoto and falling for him in the process. But she doesn’t want to choose, and she doesn’t want to come between them, so why not try all three?
The developing friendship of Peter Parker and Flash Thompson
THIS! This is the OTHER THING I loved about this movie, especially when Flash was like, “I’m sorry. Your uncle died, I’m sorry.” I just love that they made him more than just the school bully, and this is even after Peter humiliated him with the basketball scene, he took a second to swallow his pride like, “Hey, I’m really sorry for your loss.” He didn’t freak out when Peter slammed him against the lockers, he was just like, “I get it,” and just… that was really powerful to me.
My kind of love poem
Kanji’s face is red.
Naoto’s hat is blue.
Let us start a social link.
Just me and you.
How did I make this about my OTP I don’t even…
My otp: Dojima and Adachi. Because Dojima still treats him like his partner in the end, calling for a stretcher, and going to visit him while he’s in prison. And I think Adachi actually felt bad for what he did, there’s something about the way he looks when the police are like, “His old partner called for a stretcher,” just… the entire time during the fight against him it seemed like he didn’t give two fucks, but then there’s this moment where I can feel him being like, “… oh god what have I done?” Because Dojima (and Nanako) were hurt. I actually believe that he DIDN’T want Nanako to get mixed in everything, that he sort of had this kind of blissful family experience with Dojima and Nanako. And that, to me, made Adachi a really interesting character. Going from dumb cop, to someone who just didn’t seem to care, then in the end there’s this hint of, “Actually… he cared for this one thing,” just gives him more meaning.
My most hated pairing: Really don’t have one.
My unusual otp: I’ve seen some “shouldn’t be pretty” pictures of him and Souji (shouldn’t be pretty means that the picture shouldn’t be pretty because it’s wrong for whatever reason, but it’s pretty) but… I’m not sure if I can pair them together. Like, Souji is obviously important, but… I dunno if I can cross that line. But I can see how others can? And do? I think the strangest OTP I’ve had for Dojima is with Naoto. Just… I’m not sure why he never addressed her being a child – she goes to school with Souji – and a woman and her issues. I feel like he could have talked to her about things, and been like, a great mentor of sorts. Whether it crosses into relationship territory is debatable, but again, it’s that whole “shouldn’t be pretty” thing.
My crossover otp: The only one I ever sort of had as a joke was Dojima and Matsuda from Death Note, but that’s because Matsuda reminded me of Adachi, you know, that young cop who kinda messes up sometimes?
My brotp/friendship otp: Refer to previous answers about Souji and Naoto.
Character headcanon: Dojima really, truly cares for his family, even if it doesn’t seem like it. I think after his wife died he was completely lost. Think about it. Losing his wife, he’s suddenly a single father to a very young child. And he’s a detective, so there’s this sense of, “I have all of these resources, I should be able to figure this out right?” I think Adachi became part of that family, like, he became more of a partner. Whether you see that going into sexual territory or not is up to you. But I sort of think that Adachi is that “optimistic” cop that Dojima was, once upon a time, before his wife died. And Dojima needs that around. So when it turns out that Adachi is the one behind everything, Dojima just sort of clings to the old times with Adachi, you know, the dumb cop he was, “Idiot probably needs a stretcher,” and things like that.
I also think that he sees himself in Naoto, you know, the young upstart who thinks they can come in and take on the world? That’s why he’s not too hard on her (and why I wish they would’ve interacted a bit more, ESPECIALLY since he talks to her on the phone when Nanako is taken and she’s all, “Surely you knew the case wasn’t over yet!”)
WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS?!
My otp: I read a fic where he was molesting his students… particularly Yosuke, and it… made sense in the fic *shudders*
My most hated pairing: I don’t even have a pairing to begin with
My unusual otp: King Moron x Yosuke, it’s NOT an OTP though, just a pairing I read about and they made it work in the fic (it wasn’t consensual on Yosuke’s part, btw)
My crossover otp: None
My brotp/friendship otp: I guess Kashiwagi, but she came into the game after he died so…
Character headcanon: It’s that fic’s fault, having him molest students, just… CANNOT UNSEE!
Oh dear lord I’m actually getting characters!
My otp: Kanji and Naoto. Of course.
My most hated pairing: Just like Naoto, I have none…
Wait, that’s not true, I have one.
One thing I hate being done in Kanji fics is like, him “taking out his anger” on Yosuke, or something, because “Yosuke is such a homophobe.” I hate, hate hate HATE when people are like, “He should rape him and show him who’s boss.” O.K. First of all. How is RAPE going to make Yosuke less of a homophobe? Second of all, I never really saw Yosuke as homophobic, I just saw him as a teenager. As great as it is to have so many people playing who want the characters to be all accepting of everything, the point of P4 is to grow into acceptance. And, let’s face it, a 16 year old kid in rural Japan might NOT be the most understanding person out there. I think Yosuke is a realistic high school character, and if he were actually homophobic, he would be a lot worse.
And no one seems to see him grow and stop with his terrible jokes towards Kanji.
So I don’t hate Kanji/Yosuke, I actually don’t MIND that pairing, I just hate how people write it sometimes.
My unusual otp: Guess that would be Kanji/Yosuke *points above* I also don’t mind adorable Kanji and Yukiko from back in the day, I totally have headcanons of them playing together.
My crossover otp: Sebastian from Black Butler and Kanji. Just… again, don’t ask.
My brotp/friendship otp: JUST LIKE NAOTO, either Rise or Souji, and if a bit of fooling around happens that’s fine with me.
Character headcanon: I don’t think Kanji can be called gay or straight with 100 percent certainty (and I think that’s the point). I think he’s trying to figure it out, and I think he’s a good representation of teenage sexuality. I think in our culture people like to think that teenagers “don’t know what they want” or “are too young to understand,” but I think those years are some of the most important in your life. I think that’s when you’re discovering yourself, who you are, and who you want to be. Like me, for instance, I grew up thinking I was straight. Turned 18, went to college, everything changed. I think sexuality is something that teenagers sort of struggle with and might not know the answers too, and I think it’s good that Kanji is questioning things. There’s too many people who don’t, and just go through the motions without addressing their feelings, hiding them until they sort of blow up – which is what happens in P4.
Being with Naoto further illustrates this. His feelings start while he thinks she’s male, and when he finds out the truth there’s no, “Oh thank GOD I’m not gay,” it’s, “You’re not a guy?” Followed by that rather great dialogue of, “Let Naoto get it all out, otherwise, she’ll keep hurting.” And Naoto accepts herself as female, but I’d like to think that she still has “male” moments, still likes to wear male clothing and all that because that would be hard to just let go of, and I think Kanji would get that.
I also have random headcanons of him liking the dress in the beauty pageant, liking to wear heels, and Naoto going along with it. I think my ultimate headcanon for the pairing is them taking the definitions we know of “gender” and delightfully turning them upside down.
Oh dear, let’s see…
My otp: Uh… I… guess Mello/Near? But it’s more of a, “Realized this too late,” or, “Knew all along but had no time because of the events in the series.” I think at the end, when Near gives Mello credit for helping, that’s when I really felt the otp vibe? But by then Mello was gone.
As a bonus I also don’t mind Gevanni/Near, but that’s because I found a great series of fics once upon a time.
My most hated pairing: None that I can think of. Wasn’t really in the Death Note fandom that long to develop too many pairings.
My unusual otp: Um… I read a good Matt/Near fic once, so… maybe that? I’m not really sure.
My crossover otp: Snow from FF13 and Near. Again, don’t ask, it’s a really really long roleplay story with my partner.
My brotp/friendship otp: Don’t really have one.
Character headcanon: To me Near has one of the saddest endings of all in the series. Even if the case is solved, everyone he even remotely might have cared for is dead. L, Mello, just… I feel like in that last episode/manga chapter when he credits Mello for helping, I remember he’s kind of sitting there, quietly talking, and I think he has this moment of, “Great, we know who the killer is, but there’s no one here with me.” Like there’s this moment where I think he realizes that this man standing in front of him (Light) has taken away the only people he even considered calling a family. And that is chilling, to me, and one of the reasons why I loved Death Note so much.
