It’s really sad when my conversation with my manager goes like this…

Manager:  So… did you request Wednesday and Thursday off to play Persona?

Me:  PFFT!  W-what?!  N-no, of course not!

Manager:  …

Me:  …

Manager:  …

Me:  … well technically I have to write a review for it for a website so that’s like requesting time off to work a second job right?

So needless to say I have my day(s) planned for Arena.  It’s full of short work shifts, possible cosplay for said shift, pizza, and fight sticks.  How’s everyone else spending Arena day?

Pretty obvious, but, Persona 4?

1. The first character I first fell in love with

Hmmm, that’s actually hard since I honestly love them all, but the one I fell for the hardest when playing was Kanji and it was purely because of his shadow.  I mean I liked him before, you know, the tough guy with a soft spot, who secretly sewed and things like that, but in the rpg (and gaming) world a thug with a smile isn’t that rare.  But then… he started crushing on Naoto and wondering about himself, “He’s a guy, and I’m a guy, and he’s interested in me?”  Then his shadow appeared and gave what I felt was a powerful speech about men being better, because women made fun of him, and just wanting to be accepted for who he was.  I mean… wow.  I know even now people debate Kanji’s sexual preferences, but whether you read him as gay, straight, or bi, that speech about wanting to be accepted for who you are was the one that impacted me the most.  I know the overall theme is acceptance, but something about being made fun of for liking things that aren’t normal, being called a queer for it, and just wanting someone to say, “Hey, it’s o.k.,” just hit hardest for me with Kanji.

Oh, urm, getting kinda emotional with that… he also uses a folding chair and his crush is adorable  ^^

2. The character I never expected to love as much as I do now

I knew I would love Naoto, especially with her, “People judge me because of my gender,” shadow, especially for that boy let me tell you.  I didn’t expect to love Rise as much as I do, I usually don’t like the cute, bubbly girls, but she really fits the group and I love her interactions with them.  Even Teddie is adorable with his bear puns ^^

However, I’m going to answer this one with Yosuke.  Sure, I pair him with the MC like no one’s business (I knew I would) and he’s a cutie who means well but usually comes off as a jerk, but the reason I love him so much is because I think he’s one of the most realistic characters in the group.  He’s got the most realistic, teenage reactions to things.  I mean Kanji’s got the rash reactions, Naoto’s got the thoughtful ones, but Yosuke, to me, is just so 16 years old.  You especially see this with his interactions with Kanji early on in the game (you can guess what my answer to #4 will be here).  His teasing and his, “Dude, are you sure you’re not… you know…” is just so 16 year old boy!  And that’s why I love him.

Yes, of course, you want everyone to accept the possibly gay boy, but lets face it, not everyone does, not everyone will, ESPECIALLY in that age group.  I was in high school, once.  I remember seeing the one gay kid in school, and sure, the girls were kinda like, “Oh sweetie you’re fabulous,” but the boys?  I mean, they didn’t mean any real harm, they just didn’t understand.  As a girl with a girl partner, of course I want the world to accept me, but I know that they don’t and with some people they honestly don’t mean it, they just don’t understand and, eventually, they do.  Eventually there’s a moment of, “Eh, who cares,” but don’t assume everyone starts out like that and certainly don’t hate them for it, some people you just have to talk to (i.e. my dad, we had to talk about it, and now he’s perfectly fine with it)  Hell, I didn’t even understand it at first.  I wasn’t bullying or anything like that, but I certainly wasn’t thrilled when I started crushing on a girl, I was scared out of my mind because I thought something was wrong with me.  It’s no one’s fault, I just grew up with people who dated boys so I thought, “Shit…”

Now back to Yosuke.  His reactions, to me, are just realistic.  Even in the game/anime in the beginning Chie is like, “Eh… something seems strange about those two…” and she goes through the motions, too.  Granted, faster than Yosuke, but that’s fine.  Yosuke doesn’t HATE Kanji, if he really, truly did he would be way, way meaner.  And as the game progresses that “you can’t sleep in the same tent as us” shifts to “tee hee, what’s your type” and then “mysterious girl who’s strong and surprisingly-”“gee, wonder who that could be…”  If you haven’t noticed, Yosuke teases everyone, but his teasing with Kanji changes as the game progresses as their friendship does.

Phew, that was long, next one.

3. The character everyone else loves that I don’t

I don’t really have a character I dislike.  I mean I guess I didn’t care for Ai too much, but I didn’t hate her, I thought she was an o.k. social link.  Namatame wasn’t bad either, just misguided, I thought he put an interesting spin on the case.  I seriously don’t have anyone I downright hate, even Adachi.  I love him as a villain, he’s a good bad guy.  Even Mitsuo, who I actually thought was really interesting because I really can see, in our world today, someone wanting THAT much attention.

So… urm, next?

4. The character I love that everyone else hates

See my answer to #2.  Though there’s a lot of Yosuke fans, there’s a lot of Yosuke haters.  I will, however, address a serious pet peeve of mine.

It’s o.k. to hate a character, for whatever reason.  This tends to get the character abused, but one thing I will never, ever understand, is the logic of using rape on said character you hate, especially if you hate him because you think he’s homophobic.  Back when the badbadbathhouse was still a big thing, I’d see requests of Kanji raping Yosuke to “teach him a lesson” or just Yosuke being raped in general, and it just boggled my mind because… how is rape going to make a supposedly homophobic person see the error of his ways?  If anything, being raped would probably MAKE IT WORSE.  I hate rape being tossed around nonchalantly, like it’s not a big deal, “Tee hee Kanji rapes Yosuke” or even “Souji rapes Yosuke and they fall in love.”  O.K.  Yes.  Sometimes victims fall in love with their rapist, but it isn’t this cute thing, it’s not some method to toss in a fic for two boys to fall in love and live happily ever after – or to teach a boy a lesson in acceptance.

So, yes, still love Yosuke *hugs him*

5. The character I used to love but don’t any longer

Still love them all  :)

6. The character I would totally smooch

Uh… probably Kanji?  I dunno  *blush*  maybe Teddie, just like a cute one on the cheek  ^^

7. The character I’d want to be like

Naoto.  I want to be that accomplished of a person  :)  Or Kanji, because I would love for my creative workings to be received that well  ^^

8. The character I’d slap

Adachi, since he’s the villain.  Still love him, though.

9. A pairing that I love

Oh honey, let me tell you a story about my Kanji and Naoto feelings.  Just, o.k., I don’t think I’ve loved a pairing THIS much.  They just hit all points of love.  You can really ship them however you want.  Het?  Yaoi?  (yuri… oh come on, Kanji could work that dress again).  Anyhow, I like them because I think they fit each other, I think they get each other.  They both want acceptance for almost similar reasons: they don’t want to be judged because of their gender.  Naoto wants to be taken seriously as a detective even if she’s a woman, Kanji wants to be able to do the things he loves even if he’s a man.  They both act in the ways people expect them to act.  Kanji’s the tough guy, Naoto’s the hard-boiled boy detective.  I think Kanji can get through to her, and she can get through to Kanji (well, hell, she did didn’t she?  He says so in his social link that watching her inspired him to be who he wants to be.  At the same time, Kanji gets to her, too, at least in the anime there’s the Nanako episode where she says something like, “Tatsumi-kun is right, I put the case before your own safety,” because when they found out Souji was getting threatening letters, she looked at it from a case POV instead of worrying about his safety.  There’s also the fact that he cheered her up at the hospital when she started to blame herself).

Besides the obviousness of them being flippin’ adorable, I think they just work well together.  I couldn’t even DATE Naoto in the game because I was too busy shipping her with Kanji  ^^;;

I also really like Chie/Yukiko and Souji(Yu)/Yosuke.  These are just two pairings that are always there for one another and rely on each other.  Chie needs Yukiko, Yukiko needs Chie, and Souji/Yu ESPECIALLY needs Yosuke.  This much is clear in the anime.  If you think about it, Yosuke saves him quite a bit, and is there for him when others aren’t (i.e. Nanako, he walks back to the hospital to comfort him).

(secretly, I’m scared about the true ending episode, I have this sinking feeling that Yosuke is going to be the last to “die” and Souji/Yu is going to lose his shit)

Oh, I also like Dojima/Adachi, especially since Adachi is the bad guy and that just complicates things… ugh I like too many pairings in this fandom… OT3 Kanji/Rise/Naoto… o.k., I’m stopping now!

10. A pairing that I despise

You know the best thing about this fandom?  You can pair practically any character with someone and make it work.  I even like the dynamic between Adachi/Naoto, because she’s a woman who pretty much puts him in his place, which should drive him nuts (check out “The Shortest Distance From A to B fic for more on THAT).  But yeah, there’s not really a pairing that I hate.

Wow… this was loooooong!  Sorry  ^^;;;

Name a fandom you know I know and I’ll tell you

Sometimes I feel like a failure

When I’m at work, trying to tell someone about P4 Arena and why they should reserve it, and they don’t.

Like, it’s always a regular customer who likes Atlus games, or rare games, or kinda weird games, and I absolutely KNOW they’re going to come in day one, looking for the game, wanting the free soundtrack.  And I try to stress that, you know, as a company, GameStop isn’t really thinking about games like P4 Arena.  Sure, we have cover art for it, but it’s a small section of the front counter.  And I mean, yeah, it’ll make money as a whole, but not nearly as much as something like Call of Duty, which we’ve been reserving since forever, and have goo-gobs of bonuses with.  Or the giant Resident Evil 6 shrine, or Assassin’s Creed, or Borderlands (nothing wrong with these games, I’m excited too)

I try to stress that, you know, as far as extra copies go?  Yeah… probably not very many, or we’ll get copies without the soundtrack that you KNOW is going to be GOOD because its Atlus.

But for some reason I get the, “Eh, I can wait,” when you know, Atlus fan customer, you can’t!  Same thing happened with Persona 4, when we had artbooks.  Guy didn’t reserve, didn’t get an artbook, game was suddenly hard to find.  And then I get that look, you know, the, “How could you sell out of copies,” look when WE JUST HAD THIS CONVERSATION BEFORE THE GAME CAME OUT!

*sigh*

A day in the life of me  ^^;;;  I just have to get ready to deal with the, “You guys got that new Persona fighting game,” on launch day where I’ll probably be like, “Uh… no, sold out, we didn’t get that many copies,” and then the, “Oh really?”  Yeah… really.  Didn’t we talk about this?
