[Ficlet] Why?

OMG HELP I’VE FALLEN DOWN THE RABBIT HOLE!

Series: Star Wars Episode VII

Pairing: Finn/Poe

Warnings: MAJOR SPOILERS, sap

Summary: Finn asks a simple question

“Why?”

The dust had settled and Finn found himself back at the Resistance base. Somehow, he was alive, despite the brutal cut of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. He could still feel the sting in his back and was in no condition to move, but thankfully, he had no plans of leaving the medical bed.

According to Poe, who was faithfully sitting by his side, Rey had defeated the man and returned with the devastating news of Han Solo’s fate. Finn, selfishly, was glad that he was unconscious during that exchange. But now the young woman was gone and on a new quest: finding Luke Skywalker. As much as he wished he could be by his friend’s side, he had a feeling that she had to make this journey alone.

Which left Finn with the opportunity to ask a question that had been plaguing his mind ever since he met the man sitting by his bedside: why?

Poe graced him with that gentle smile of his, something that Finn felt he didn’t deserve. He hadn’t earned this man’s generosity and he especially hadn’t earned a smile like that. “Why what?”

There were so many questions to follow up with. Why had he gone along with a Stormtropper, the very thing he was supposed to fight against? Why had he bothered giving a Stormtropper a name instead of treating him with absolute caution and mistrust? Why had he let that Stormtropper keep his jacket and thank him for the things he had done? If Finn were to be perfectly honest, he’d protected that droid out of necessity. Rey had been the true protector, had been the true heroine of the story. Finn had just been tagging along in hopes of escape.

Hell, he had left Rey and the others, watching her get captured by the very thing he’d been fleeing from.

So why? Why had the man next to him summed up his actions as “good”? “You’re a good man,” he had said to him, and he had left it at that. Now that the adrenaline wasn’t pumping, now that they were in a comfortable calm, he could get the answers he’d been so desperately wanting.

But that smile, that damn smile, was so very distracting. Suddenly, Finn couldn’t figure out how to pose any of his questions. So he said the word again. “Why?” He said it again in hopes that, maybe, Poe could figure out what he meant.

Finn wasn’t sure if Poe understood or not. He wasn’t sure if his eyes conveyed the message he was trying to get across, or if there had been enough emotion in his voice when he spoke. What he was sure of, out of everything that had gone on since he pulled off that Stormtropper helmet, was that Poe’s lips tasted of the freedom he’d been running after.
