Headcanon: In which nothing is petty, Shirogane, especially when it comes to matters of the heart

So this isn’t a request one (still need to finish those) but I had this thought in my head while at work (somehow this came to mind at work, I dunno ^^;;;)  Usually, when it comes to stories of jealously, it’s Kanji jealous of Souji, or someone, or something when it comes to Naoto.  Rarely have I seen it be the reverse, of Naoto being jealous because someone is interested in Kanji.

So I thought I’d shake things up a bit  :)

Warning:  Completely worksafe, fairly short since I get off in like twenty minutes, lots of Naoto arguing with herself, made up female character-chan hitting on Kanji, and cheese fries.  Always, ALWAYS about the cheese fries!

***

It’s a feeling she’s not familiar with.

Naoto Shirogane watches as Kanji Tatsumi steps out of the room where the sewing club meets – good for him for actually going inside – and accompanying him is a…

… a

… girl.

She’s got all of the feminine qualities that Naoto lacks – which isn’t saying much, she realizes, because she isn’t terribly feminine at all.  But she’s tall without needing platforms – so what, height means nothing, you know.  She has pretty red hair – dyed, Naoto can see hints of dark roots what a petty thought, Shirogane she thinks to herself.  Her breasts are a decent size – not as big as Naoto’s, mind you, but this girl certainly isn’t hiding them.  Still, they’re a bit mediocre, it’s not like she’ll ever get a hot springs full of girls to compliment her skin anytime soon.

At this point Naoto decides that something is most definitely wrong if she’s thinking like this.  Perhaps she should seek medical attention.

Kanji says something to the girl and she laughs.  It’s a cute little sound, not as high as Rise’s but not as elegant as Yukiko-senpai’s – before one of her laughing fits.  It’s perfect – no, not perfect, such a thing does not exist – and it makes Kanji blush.

Naoto can feel her eyes narrowing as she watches them.

In fact, she’s glaring so much that she doesn’t even hear Rise Kujikawa coming up behind her, throwing her arms around her shoulders with a cry of, “Naoto-kun!”

Naoto jumps, almost almost squeaks but she manages to stifle it, “K-Kujikawa-san, I have told you about doing-”

“Oh!  Is that Megumi-chan?”

Megumi?  Is that its name?

Not its, her.  Another petty thought, Shirogane, she thinks.

“I suppose so,” Naoto says.

“She’s in one of my classes.  She’s really nice.”

“Yes, I am sure.  Now if you will excuse me, I-”

“Kanji-kun!  Megumi-chan!”

Naoto watches as both Kanji and the apparently really nice “Megumi-chan” walk over to them.  Kanji glances away from Naoto, blushing as he rubs the back of his head, “’sup?”

“Hello,” Naoto says in response.

“Kanji-kun, I didn’t know you and Megumi-chan were friends,” Rise says.

“We… w-we just met in the sewin’ club is all,” Kanji gets flustered much too easily, “It ain’t nohin.’”

Megumi giggles.  Gyah, that sound again!  Naoto decides that it has a similar affect as nails on a chalkboard, “Nothing?  Really?  So we’re not going to Junes after school?”

Junes?  Junes?!  But that is their meeting place.  Granted, the entire team is there.  And granted, there’s no case to solve anymore.  But they always meet there regardless, as a group of friends, and those specifications do not include Megumi-chan.

“Were you two going out on a date?!”  Rise asks, “Did you hear that, Naoto-kun?”

She knows what the implication is and she frowns at Rise.  “I am quite capable of hearing, thank you.”  It’s quite foolish of her to insist that she be jealous of Kanji’s personal life.  Rise has been poking her about the boy for months now, and Naoto always calmly reminds her that she has police work to do.  There’s no time for romance, she’s a detective, so Rise’s point is moot.

“It ain’t a date!  We was just gonna get a bite to eat, maybe with the others if they’re there.”

With.  The others?!

The others are their friends, not Megumi-chan’s!  “A-are you sure that is-”

“Oh!  Naoto-kun and I can come with you!”

“Sure,” Megumi says, “I don’t mind.  The more the merrier, I always say.”

Great.  She has a “saying” too.

This feeling Naoto isn’t familiar with?  It’s starting to turn sour in her stomach.

***

Megumi-chan is perfect – no no such a thing doesn’t… oh hell, she’s perfect.

There’s no awkward moments between her and the group at all.  She introduces herself and is all perfect smiles, everyone smiles back – especially Yosuke-senpai and Teddie horny little… stop with the petty thoughts, Shirogane! she thinks to herself.  When she eats her food it’s quietly, with a dainty sort of grace that Naoto had only seen with Yukiko-senpai.  She explains that her and Kanji are in the sewing club together, or rather, how she saw him standing outside and encouraged him to come in.  She goes on to talk about how good he is, “His dolls are so cute,” and he blushes – as always – and pretends like there’s something to look at on the table.

Naoto decides that she hates her and wonders if she can, perhaps, pull an Adachi and shove her into a T.V.  Harsh, Shirogane she thinks to herself, but it is an interesting thought nonetheless.

When they finish eating Rise is sad that Megumi-chan is leaving because, “We were having so much fun!”  Megumi just laughs – ugh, GOD! – and suggests that they get together tomorrow.

“I cannot,” Naoto says, “I have things to work on at the station.”

“Oh, well we can get together without you, right?”

Naoto can’t stop the frown from spreading across her face when Megumi says that.  She also can’t stop her eyes from narrowing, “I apologize that I do not have time to always fraternize with others.  I have a job to do.”

“Oh!  That’s right!  You’re that kid detective, right?”

The first image Naoto has in her head is her pulling on that obviously dyed red hair – so, so obvious, that is not petty that is fact, Shirogane she thinks.  The second image she has is of slamming her into a table hard enough for it to break.  Not that she’s that strong, oh but she could be, perhaps, if she builds a-

“Yeah, she’s a detective,” Kanji says, “A really cool one.”

And in seconds the frown in gone, being replaced by a small smile, “Thank you, Kanji-kun-”

“Well we can still get together tomorrow, right?  Maybe Naoto can join us later.”

“I…”

“Awesome!”  This comes from Yosuke-senpai, “Then we’ll get together again tomorrow.”

“… great.”

The next day Naoto knows that she is speed reading through the notes at the station.  Words are starting to run together, but as long as she gets the gist of what the document is talking about…

Her phone goes off, interrupting her not-reading/speed reading/working on important detective business.

OMG Megumi-chan just put her hand on Kanji-kun’s shoulder!!!

Naoto sighs and responds back and that means what exactly, Kujikawa-san?

It’s a clear sign that she’s hitting on him!

Part of Naoto wants to block Rise’s number.  The other part is silently thanking her for a play by play on the scandalous Megumi-chan’s antics against her Kan-

… her… what?

What was that thought just now?

OMG OMG OMG now she’s sharing French fries with him!

Naoto decides to ignore the rest of the text messages.  She has work to do.  Important – very important – police work to do, you see.  She’s a detective, and this station would fall apart without-

… French fries, huh?

She can’t believe she’s doing this but she’s texting Rise back just normal fries?

NO!  CHEESE FRIES!  And she paid for one basket for them to share!

Again, she can’t believe she’s doing this.  In fact, at this point she’s under the impression that she has left her body and is watching this girl who looks like herself standing up, going to Dojima, and asking if she can leave early.  When Dojima asks why she listens as this girl who looks like herself explains that something important has come up.  It is just cheese fries, Shirogane!!! she screams, but the damage is done.

She watches this girl who looks like herself as she leaves the police station.

“Naoto-kun!”

Everyone turns, looking surprised to see Naoto standing at the end of the table.

“Thought you had to work,” Megumi says.

“I finished early,” Naoto says coolly in response.  Smooth, Shirogane she thinks to herself.

Kanji suddenly feels a touch bit uncomfortable as Rise stands up, letting Naoto sit where she had been sitting – to Kanji’s left.  Megumi is sitting on his right side, the basket of fries almost finished, “Sorry.  If I knew you were coming early I would have gotten you something, too.”

“Yeah!  Megumi-chan treated us to lunch!”  This enthusiasm comes from Teddie whose practically got hearts in his eyes as he watches the always perfect Megumi-chan, poorly dyed hair in a neat bun – not that neat, there’s a few strands misplaced, why not make the proper efforts if you’re going to style your hair in a certain way.  Again, not petty Shirogane she thinks just stating the facts.

“Hey, what are friends for?”

Friends?  Friends!?  “We all just met you yesterday; I fail to see how that makes us friends.”

Wow, did she really just say that?  Naoto is actually a bit surprised, blinking a couple of times as she plays the words back through her head.  Yes, yes that was indeed her saying that.

“True,” Megumi says, “But Kanji-kun and I have been spending time together in class.”

“It is a class; of course you would spend time together.”

“Dude,” Yosuke says, watching as the two girls talk back and forth with one another, “Are they fighting over Kanji?”

“I… think so?”  Chie says, looking confused, “I’m… not quite-”

“If I didn’t know better I’d say you were jealous,” Megumi says.

This makes both Kanji and Naoto blush, but Naoto is the first to recover, “T-there is nothing to be jealous of!”

“Y-yeah!”  This comes from Kanji, “Me and Naoto ain’t like that!”

“Oh?  So you are available?”

“No!”  Both of them say at the same time.  They look at one another, blush harder, then the stuttering begins again, “T-that is to say that… I-I mean…”

“Y-yeah, I just… w-w-we ain’t…”

“Are you or are you not?”  Megumi asks; then she smirks up at Kanji, “Because if you’re free, I’d love to go to-”

“He is not free!”

Oh god Shirogane stop it before you-

“And why is that?”

“Because he is having dinner with me!”

… damnit Shirogane.

“I-I am?”  Kanji stares at Naoto, his jaw practically hanging from the hinges of his mouth.

“… I… well…”  There’s no other choice but to go for it, now, “Y-yes.  You are.”

It’s not the most romantic story of a first date, but it is the most efficient, Naoto thinks.  It does, at least, get Kanji to smile and makes the “ha ha not so perfect after all now are you?” Megumi-chan stop sharing French fries with her Kan-

… yeah, that’s right.

Her Kanji.
