Oh dear lord I’m actually getting characters!
My otp: Kanji and Naoto. Of course.
My most hated pairing: Just like Naoto, I have none…
Wait, that’s not true, I have one.
One thing I hate being done in Kanji fics is like, him “taking out his anger” on Yosuke, or something, because “Yosuke is such a homophobe.” I hate, hate hate HATE when people are like, “He should rape him and show him who’s boss.” O.K. First of all. How is RAPE going to make Yosuke less of a homophobe? Second of all, I never really saw Yosuke as homophobic, I just saw him as a teenager. As great as it is to have so many people playing who want the characters to be all accepting of everything, the point of P4 is to grow into acceptance. And, let’s face it, a 16 year old kid in rural Japan might NOT be the most understanding person out there. I think Yosuke is a realistic high school character, and if he were actually homophobic, he would be a lot worse.
And no one seems to see him grow and stop with his terrible jokes towards Kanji.
So I don’t hate Kanji/Yosuke, I actually don’t MIND that pairing, I just hate how people write it sometimes.
My unusual otp: Guess that would be Kanji/Yosuke *points above* I also don’t mind adorable Kanji and Yukiko from back in the day, I totally have headcanons of them playing together.
My crossover otp: Sebastian from Black Butler and Kanji. Just… again, don’t ask.
My brotp/friendship otp: JUST LIKE NAOTO, either Rise or Souji, and if a bit of fooling around happens that’s fine with me.
Character headcanon: I don’t think Kanji can be called gay or straight with 100 percent certainty (and I think that’s the point). I think he’s trying to figure it out, and I think he’s a good representation of teenage sexuality. I think in our culture people like to think that teenagers “don’t know what they want” or “are too young to understand,” but I think those years are some of the most important in your life. I think that’s when you’re discovering yourself, who you are, and who you want to be. Like me, for instance, I grew up thinking I was straight. Turned 18, went to college, everything changed. I think sexuality is something that teenagers sort of struggle with and might not know the answers too, and I think it’s good that Kanji is questioning things. There’s too many people who don’t, and just go through the motions without addressing their feelings, hiding them until they sort of blow up – which is what happens in P4.
Being with Naoto further illustrates this. His feelings start while he thinks she’s male, and when he finds out the truth there’s no, “Oh thank GOD I’m not gay,” it’s, “You’re not a guy?” Followed by that rather great dialogue of, “Let Naoto get it all out, otherwise, she’ll keep hurting.” And Naoto accepts herself as female, but I’d like to think that she still has “male” moments, still likes to wear male clothing and all that because that would be hard to just let go of, and I think Kanji would get that.
I also have random headcanons of him liking the dress in the beauty pageant, liking to wear heels, and Naoto going along with it. I think my ultimate headcanon for the pairing is them taking the definitions we know of “gender” and delightfully turning them upside down.
