In which I ramble about things

Because I was trying to write a headcanon thing but I can’t keep this frustration inside.  It’s not really tumblr that I see these postings at, but on facebook, and I really don’t feel like posting this on facebook and getting into a possible debate that might end friendships… not yet at least.

In regards to yesterday’s events, here are the postings that are irritating to see, because I hate when people make tragedies into some sort of agenda, like, “Oh it’s time to bash video games again,” or, “where’s your gun control now,” or, “this is what happens when God isn’t in school.”

***

1.  The “blame video games” or “violent media” postings.  Seriously?  Are we still on that?  First of all, the shooter “liking” Mass Effect means nothing.  It’s a game.  It’s not real.   And if he were to actually follow the game – which is not the case – it’s not this violent mess the media is trying to make it out to be.  You play a hero, you get together a crew, there’s friendships, romances, serious relationships, and in the end you’re in it to save the galaxy/world, NOT destroy it.

Even so, this doesn’t matter, because these people were pointing their fingers at the wrong guy.  So way to waste your breath, you flooded someone’s facebook who didn’t deserve it, way to check your facts first.

I get that you want a scapegoat, you want a reason for this to have happened.  But just stop.  Stop it.  You’re not going to find one in video games, no matter how you try and spin it.  There are a bunch of gamers who play games and who don’t have the urge to walk into a school and shoot children, or stab children (which is what happened in China).  I’m tired of defending my hobbies because they aren’t going to make people into killers.  Stop trying to push the blame and accept the fact that, sometimes, there’s nothing you can point the finger at.  I mean, the guy could’ve liked “puppies” on facebook, or “Lego Batman,” do you think that pushed him over the edge too?

2.  Arming teachers.  Just.  No.  That isn’t going to fix anything.  How silly of an idea is that?  So what if you arm a teacher and someone gets a hold of that gun, or a teacher has a bad day?  Like seriously, is this the direction we’re going in?  Let’s not focus on making sure teachers are paid what they deserve, or the schools have what they need, or that everyone can afford to get an education let’s… give teachers guns.  Right.  What kind of message is that for children?  "It’s not safe, so have a gun everywhere you go, even at school.“  So then what’s next?  "Let’s make sure there’s a gun in every bank, because they get robbed.  Let’s make sure there’s a gun in every restaurant, just in case.  How about at conventions, I mean, there’s so many people anything can happen.  Even better?  At home.  Let’s keep one in the house in case something goes wrong.  How about the school bus?  Or every store in the mall?”  Can you just imagine how terrifying school would be if you knew your teacher had a gun?

3.  God.  Just… the whole, “Sorry I wasn’t there for you, I’m not allowed in schools,” post.  Shut up.  Just shut up.  Don’t you dare say that.  Are you really, really going to say that since there’s no religion in schools those children died?  Really?  Really?!  How dare you!  How do you know those kids weren’t religious, that they didn’t pray at their beds every night?  How do you know they didn’t go to Sunday School all the time?  I’m not overly religious, not at all.  I do believe in a higher power of some sort, but I’m not going to blame His or Her standing in the school system for what happened.  How terrible are you to say that.  How terrible! That had NOTHING to do with this!  And I don’t know about you but if I were religious like that, that would make me extremely cynical about God.  Like… aren’t You all knowing?  Are You everywhere?  No matter what?  So just… You skipped the elementary school that day or something because no religion in schools?  Seriously?  You really want to post something like that?

*deep breath*  O.K.  I feel a bit better now, maybe headcanon things can commence tomorrow or something.
