So a good tumblr bud of mine just celebrated her… 4 year anniversary, I believe? I wanted to write something for her, but not for my current OTP, but for an old OTP that her and I randomly have in common. This is for you backside-of-the-tv (it’s a late gift but urm… here?)
Fandom: Yu Yu Hakusho
Pairing: Hiei/Kurama
Warnings: I haven’t written Yu Yu Hakusho fic in several years. This fic is more… um… dialogue and… urm… banter and kinda sap sort of? Takes place after the series. And just… wow this is like Old Fandom 101 ^^;;;

It’s not that he’s not use to seeing the red head smile when he climbs in through his window – who needs doors, anyway? It’s just that the way he’s smiling at him gives him a sense of impending doom. There are levels to Kurama’s – Shuuichi’s, whatever – smile, you see, and even after spending so much time together Hiei is still learning the basics.
After spending a month in the Makai he had been hoping for the sexual smile, the I’ve missed you come join me in bed, smile. But no, this isn’t what this is.
The best way to approach the situation is with a greeting of some sort, something besides hn or hm or a nod of the head. So the shorter demon speaks, “Hello,” and the smile grows just a bit.
He’s still not sure what it means!
“Hello Hiei. Good to see you. Although, I shouldn’t be surprised that you showed up today.”
“Today? Is there something special about today?”
The first warning sign of danger is when the smile wilts. It’s still there – sort of, thin and beautiful, though technically everything Kurama does is beautiful. But now there’s something in those eyes, a hint of fire – and not the good kind of fire, not the fire that Hiei can control or the fire that shows up when Kurama undresses in front of him. This is a little bit angry, and Hiei’s starting to grow concerned.
Not that he’ll ever show it.
“It’s our anniversary.”
Hiei blinks, then blinks again, then he speaks again, “… what?”
“Our anniversary.”
“What do you mean by that?”
Kurama sighs. Now the smile is completely gone and he’s leaning back against his wall, crossing his arms at his chest, “Our anniversary,” he says again, as if repeating it will give the phrase meaning, “Don’t tell me you forgot.”
“I didn’t even know it existed!”
“What?”
Hiei sighs, looking frustrated, “Is this some sort of human thing?”
“Surely you remember the day we first met.”
“No.”
Now Kurama’s glaring, which is never good, no matter how tough of a demon you are you never ever want to be on the receiving end of that glare, “What do you mean no?”
“I wasn’t aware I was supposed to remember that day.”
“So you don’t remember when we first met? Really?”
“I remember what happened, yes, but I don’t remember what day it was if that’s what you’re asking.”
“How could you not remember something that important?!”
“I remember what happened! Isn’t that enough?!”
“No!”
Hiei sighs. He really, really hates the fact that such a perfectly fine specimen of a demon has decided to remain in this world full of humans with their holidays and, apparently, anniversaries. Granted, the human side to Kurama is quite easy on the eyes, Hiei isn’t sure if it’s worth this sort of headache, “You mean to tell me you remember the exact day when we first met?”
“Obviously. Because it’s today!”
“Fine. It’s today. So what does that mean?”
“It means we celebrate. We spend time together. We-”
“Have sex?” It’s not that Hiei is the most sexual demon in the world – far from it, actually. It’s just that having sex with Kurama is an absolute requirement when he comes to the Ningenkai.
“You really think I’m going to have sex with you now? You forgot it was our anniversary!”
“That’s not fair! It’s a human tradition, demons don’t celebrate crap like that!”
“O.K. Calling it crap? Not a good start, Hiei.”
“You get what I mean! Humans celebrate things like birthdays, and Christmas, and… demons don’t do that!”
“You certainly didn’t object to celebrating those moments with me,” Kurama points out.
“Why would I? You get presents and food, who doesn’t want that?”
Of course saying that only makes the situation worse, not better, because now the glare has faltered into something much worse – disappointment, “So you can remember those occasions but not the day we first met?”
Pouty green eyes are the worst things to ever try and face. Hiei has tried many, many times, but he always ends up losing. After killing so many demons, participating in tournaments, and joining Mukuro this is still the one thing that gets to Hiei – besides Yukina, of course, “Look, I didn’t know it was something to celebrate, o.k.?”
“I shouldn’t have to tell you.”
“If you don’t tell me how else am I supposed to know?!”
“It’s an important day!”
“Who decides what days are important in our relationship? I mean, what if I think the anniversary of when we first, I dunno, had sex-”
“You really think about sex too much now.”
“Can you blame me?”
Kurama chuckles, but he quickly cuts it off with a frown, “Flattery will get you nowhere,” he says, sitting at the end of his bed, “And by the way. It was May 9th.”
Hiei stares at him, “You’re making that up.”
“No, I am not. That’s when we first had sex.”
“How about when you first screwed me over by helping that stupid detective?”
Kurama rolls his eyes, “How is that a good anniversary?”
“It’s important to me.”
“June 24th.”
Hiei frowns, “Bullshit.”
“You want to call Yuusuke? Because we can.”
Hiei clenched his fists, “Dark Tournament. When did we leave for it?”
“Why are all of your important days revolved around fighting?” Then, “August 2nd.”
“Most of our relationship included fighting.”
“Fine. September 27th is when you passed out from using your drag-”
“No need to remember that!” Hiei hisses, glaring at the amused look on Kurama’s face. At least he wasn’t frowning anymore, “And I get the point, o.k.? I still think it’s stupid.”
“Right. Of course you do.”
“Don’t do that,” Hiei says, walking over to sit next to Kurama, “Don’t look upset.”
“I just… I thought…”
“Look, the reason why I think it’s stupid is because I don’t need someone random day to celebrate how important you are to me.”
“Really?”
It occurs to Hiei as he watches the bright smile on Kurama’s face that he’s said exactly what the red head has wanted him to say. In fact, from the playful gleam in his eye, Hiei has a feeling that, “… is it really our anniversary or were you just trying to get me to say something sappy?”
Kurama giggles, “Like I remember when it is, do you know how long ago that was?”
“And all of those other dates?”
Kurama shrugs, “Don’t know. It pays to have a partner who isn’t aware of what months and dates are.”
“Dead,” Hiei says, “You are so dead!”
Kurama laughs and lets himself be pinned down to the bed, looking up at Hiei with a victorious little smile, “Dead, you say?” Then the smile switches gears, shifting to the smile Hiei had been hoping for in the first place when he got here, “Are you sure about that?”
Hiei smirks and shakes his head a little, “Damn fox,” he mutters as their lips connect to celebrate their not-anniversary.
Or maybe it is their anniversary, not like either of them know.
