Headcanon: In which his birthday never passes her by

So krisrix is awesome and amazing and did some lovely birthday art for her husband simongannon.  Both of them are lovely folks who enjoy my writing, so I thought I would write up some sweet sap for Kanji and Naoto for them  :)  May or may not do a smutty remix later.

Warning:  I know Kanji already had a birthday but for the purposes of this story it’s his birthday again, yay!

“What?!  It’s your birthday?!”

Kanji gives the group a sheepish look as they each take turns berating him for not informing them about his birthday.  He rubs the back of his head and smiles a bit, “I-I ain’t do it on purpose, just… kinda forgot to mention it… with the case and all…”

“Yeah but the case is over now,” Rise says, pouting, “We could’ve had a party!”

“She’s right, dude, here we are wastin’ time at Junes when we could be doin’ somethin’ fun!”

“It’s fine, really,” Kanji says, “‘sides, who knows how many birthdays we missed last year cuz of that damn case.”

“Yes but that was last year!  Now we have plenty of time to celebrate!  Oh my oh my, this is beary disappointing!”

“I have an idea.  How about we get together this weekend,” Yukiko says, “We can go to the Inn again.”

Chie raises a triumphant fist in the air, “That’s perfect!  That’ll also give us time to get presents!”

“T-that ain’t-”

“Sounds good,” this comes from senpai which, as always, seals the deal.  Whenever senpai agrees with something all of them follow.

Kanji sighs, “Fine fine,” but deep down he’s excited.  It’s nice to have people who actually give a crap about his birthday.

“Soooo, Naoto-kun?  Whatcha gonna get Kanji?”  Rise asks, poking the small detective in her side.

“H-huh?  I… t-that is none of your concern,” she says, willing herself not to blush.

Kanji blinks as he watches her turn away from Rise.  There is a tinge of red on her cheeks, something that rarely occurs.  In fact, isn’t it always the other way around?  He’s the one who can’t put together words when she’s in the same room as him.  Why is she so flustered?

The rest of the conversation consists of the group discussing gift ideas – which defeats the purpose of a gift since Kanji’s certain he shouldn’t be hearing their ideas.  Naoto is strangely quiet the entire time, head lowered until they all decide to go their separate ways for the evening.

“Hey, w-wait up,” Kanji says, running to catch up to Naoto.  She had gotten up from her seat rather quickly without even bothering to say goodbye, “Everything o.k.?”  Kanji asks.

“Huh?  Oh… y-yes, of course.  So… we will meet at the Inn this weekend?”

“Sounds like it.  Should be fun.”

“Yes…” Naoto looks back, making sure the others have all left the food court, “Um… I-I… here.”

“Wha-?”  Kanji’s eyes widen when Naoto pushes a box into his hands, “What is this?”

“F-for you.  Happy Birthday.”

“How did you-”

“You have… a file at the station.  It has your birthday listed on it.”

“You read my file so you could figure out when my birthday was?”

“N-no, nothing like that.  When I first came here, when I first approached you… I just…”

“… so… you remembered when my birthday was from back then?  That was back in May.”

“Yes…”

“It’s January.”

“I have a good memory?”

Kanji doesn’t have a good explanation for what happens next.  Maybe it’s the gift, or the way she’s blushing, or how she remembered something about him from reading about it months ago.  Whatever it is Kanji is leaning down, his lips meeting hers in a whisper of a kiss.  It should be much colder thanks to the January air, their lips chapped from the weather.  Instead they both feel a sudden wave of heat, hearts pounding and faces growing the same shade of red.

Kanji expects her to break the kiss at any moment.  Instead, he can hear her shoes clicking against the ground as she steps closer, gloved hands clutching onto his coat.  The kiss is deeper, more intimate, and soon Kanji has his arms wrapped around her waist so he can hold her in his arms.

He’s not quite sure how long they stand their, Kanji’s present falling out of his hands so he can hold her tighter, but he does know that it’s the best birthday present he’s ever gotten from anyone.

Of course, the watch he takes out of the box later is nice, too, especially when she shyly explains it’s purpose.  He simply smiles and kisses her again, the watch happily indicating their close distance.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SIMONGANNON, I hope this is to your liking :)
