The first one is a mix of colors, different shades of brown and white that checker it’s body in a mess of fur. It wrinkles its nose in her direction, trying to gain her favor, but Naoto just looks uninterested as it picks up a pellet of food and nibbles at it. The second one doesn’t even bother to come up to the glass of the cage, a fat lump of gray cuteness that’s too busy being a miniature diva to care about its master’s girlfriend visiting.
“Ain’t they cute?!”
“Um… sure… what exactly do they do?”
“What do ya mean by that? They don’t do nothin,’ they’re just cute!”
“I did not realize that keeping rats was-”
“Whoa whoa, rats? Nu uh. These are guinea pigs, Naoto.”
He sounds so intelligent about it that it’s almost frightening. Naoto sighs a bit, “I am aware, but-”
“You said rats.”
“Rats. Rodents. Just… small, mouse like creatures, and-”
“But they ain’t rats. They’re guinea pigs. Guinea pigs are cute and fluffy.”
Naoto sighs again, “Yes. But why are they in your house?”
“Cuz I got them as pets!” Kanji says happily, raising a fist in the air as if he’s just beaten a giant shadow, “I’ve been savin’ up money so that I could get one, but they seemed so happy together.”
“Right,” Naoto says, watching the brown one try and snuggle against the gray one. The gray one decides that it’s having none of that right now and moves off to the corner to continue to be a solo lump of adorable, “Real happy together,” she mutters.
“You wanna hold one?”
“No.”
“Awww, come on!”
“I would rather now get rat droppings on my hand.”
“Guinea pig. And they don’t do that, you’re thinkin’ about hamsters.”
“Am I?”
Kanji blinks, scratching the back of his head, “I think so?”
“Kanji… these kinds of pets are pointless to keep. They do not even live that long to begin with.”
“S-so what!”
“And what kind of activities would you do with such small pets? You cannot take them out for walks, or-”
“So what!” He says again, “I love Sukuna and Hikona very much, they’re adorable!”
“I understand that but-” she stops, her eyes widening, “What… did you name them?”
Kanji blushes and looks away from her, crossing his arms at his chest, “N-nothin’ important.”
“Kanji…”
“Sukuna and Hikona, all right? And you probably think it’s stupid.”
“No, that… is kind of sweet, actually…”
“… really?”
Naoto smiles a little and nods her head, “Yes, it is.”
Kanji gives her a nervous look, “So… you like them, right?”
Naoto walks over to the cage and reaches inside, gently pulling the gray guinea pig into her hands. She smiles a bit more, gently petting it with her finger, “So… which one is which?”
Kanji smiles brightly, “You’re holding Hikona. The other one is Sukuna.”
“Well Hikona,” Naoto says, lifting the guinea pig so she’s face to face with, “It is very nice to meet-… oh yuck!” She quickly sets Hikona back in its cage, glaring at it before she turns her glare onto Kanji.
Kanji lets out a nervous laugh, “Well… um… at least she just peed and not… you know…”
“Just get me a towel,” Naoto mutters, frowning down at the creature in the cage. It responds by making its way to its water bottle, taking a few licks of the water drops, not at all bothered by what it just did to her hand. As Kanji quickly rushes off to get the towel Naoto whispers darkly, “You only have five years, rodent. Eight, if you are lucky.”
She doesn’t appreciate the lack of response, doesn’t appreciate it at all.
