If Mikasa was male, her traumatic past, distant personality, and her devotion to Eren would probably make her the most popular character in the fandom. And pairing her with Eren would be touted as nearly canon. But Mikasa isn’t male and instead she’s treated as Eren’s stalker and I don’t know, that really bothers me.

Personally I love Mikasa to pieces, but this is a valid point.  What I like best is how Eren told her to fight back, it wasn’t just that he saved her, he showed her how to save herself because if she didn’t do something that man was going to kill her (not HIM, but her).  She’s flawed, yes, because sometimes her devotion to Eren has her ignoring others or needing to be told by Eren to go off with another group (though same with Eren and his one track mind, he has to learn, and so does she).  But considering her back story I can’t blame her if it takes her some time to establish connections with others.  Her parents were killed, she was kidnapped, she was going to be sold off.  So she’s actually been through two terrible worlds: the world without the titan threat was cruel to her, and the world with the titan threat was cruel.  She’s got one consistent thing right now (and thought she had lost it at one point) so yeah, she’s allowed to be a bit clingy.  And yeah, if she were male, it would be shipping times all around.

Oddly enough, I’ve been saying this about Naruto for years.

If Naruto were female, his determination to save Sasuke would be seen as stupid.  "She’d" be called foolish and obsessive, and be told to quit while “she’s” ahead.  But since Naruto is male, it means he can be slashed with Sasuke quite easily.  And I use to be a huge fan, but at some point I realized, “Shit Naruto why are you still obsessing about this?”  I mean yeah sure if he does come back yay but there was a chapter where Naruto was like, “I don’t care if I lose my arms, and legs, and eyes I’ll still find a way to bring him back,” or something like that.  And I sat there like, “… holy… shit… you… are… insane.”  And I realized, wow, if you were a girl the fandom would be bashing the hell out of you.

Proof in this is Sakura, who is hated on for having a crush on Sasuke, and people forget that she was part of the team too and she actually cares for BOTH of them at this point, but no, she’s a bitch, the end.  It’s a thing that happens with female characters sometimes.  I’ve done it before, years ago, with Gundam Wing and Relena.  "She’s in the way of the Heero and Duo,“ "What a bitch,” “Ugh,” and later I realized, you know… she actually grows up.  Probably more than anyone else.  But I was so focused on the yaoi that I ignored it.  She was in the way of my OTP, which meant that she was to be hated.  It’s a silly thing we do in fandom but usually we reach a point where we realize what we’re doing.
