The Inner Workings of a Chibi.
Same Love, Different Perspectives?

kaiserneko:

It’s come to my attention very recently that there is a large percentage of the LGBT community out there who not only do not appreciate/enjoy “Same Love” by Macklemore, but they in fact find it insulting that a heterosexual would try and sing on the behalf of our cause and orientation.

First off: Do any of you homosexuals out there who take issue with this song realize the boon that it is to have an intensely popular, heterosexual singer openly supporting us? With a beautiful, 100% legitimate song dedicated to our orientation and the issues we face?

We need this kind of support, in case you haven’t noticed. We’ve made quite the progress over the last several decades but while acceptance is at an all time high, we’re not exactly getting the fairest of treatment by mainstream media, nor are getting the sort of bi-partisan exposure and discussion that we absolutely need.

Having heterosexuals support us is so incredibly beneficial. It sets a positive example for other heterosexual men and women that may listen and enjoy them and their music.

Second: I really don’t give a damn if he’s heterosexual, when it comes to identifying with us. He sees inequality, he comprehends the sort of pain and sadness that discrimination and irrational fear bring, and he just wants to send out a positive, reaffirming message.

Stop acting like just because you’re homosexual, only you get to talk about it. His perspective is valid and his belief is legitimate; stop trying to quell the exploration of the subject and let those different from us show their love and support.

At the very least, allow them to put their own perspective into the public image. It’s their right.

Wow.  Didn’t I just reblog this like an hour ago about Madonna?

But seriously, this whole attitude of “since you aren’t like me you can’t understand me so stop talking/singing/acting/whatever as if you know me” needs to stop.  The point of our cause it to get support.  Now that we’re getting support, we should be happy, not, “Well you’re not gay so you don’t know what you’re talking about.”  If that were the case I should be mad at the people in office in my state because they’re not gay, yet they had a vote and decided that it was o.k. for me to get married.  But wait, they aren’t gay, so they don’t understand right?

I, for one, feel really, really happy when someone outside the minority group sees that things need to change.  When my white friends get pissed when someone is being racist, I’m happy that they get it.  When election season came up here and my straight friends voted no, and cheered when Minnesota became one of the states to allow gay married, I was thrilled.  That means that they want to see me happy, they want me to have the same rights they do, and think it’s bullshit that I don’t.  When people were talking about “legitimate rape” and things being “her fault for what she was wearing” and men stepped up like, “What the fuck are you talking about,” it was like… great.  Yes.  Thank you.  Thank you for being on my side on this.

This sudden rush of people who feel like straight people, or white people, or men, and things like that can’t fight for us because they aren’t us is crazy.  Haven’t we been WANTING them to understand?  The fact that this song is at the top of the charts is a huge, huge deal.  And it’s not loud or violent or pissed off, it’s just… a guy talking calmly about how things need to change.  That’s it.  What’s so wrong with that?
