Birth by Sleep: FUCK YEAH, RIKU
Kingdom Hearts: WHAT THE FUCK, RIKU
Chain of Memories: WHERE THE FUCK IS RIKU
Kingdom Hearts II: I FUCKING FOUND RIKU
Dream Drop Distance: CAN WE FUCK NOW, RIKU
Truth.
What Sora has along with his kind personality is a strong sense of justice. On top of Yen Sid telling him the org members are bad, he sees them wrecking havoc in other worlds constantly. Plus Demyx obviously has his bad side, too. He steals the talisman in Olympus Coliseum and you see how quickly he can snap into his serious mode aka “Silence, traitor.”
I’ve just recently started to replay KH2 (for about the billionth time), so I’m gonna throw in my two cents as well.
While soraspromise is right in that Sora does have a strong sense of justice and his actions being led by what Yen Sid was telling him and so on, I don’t think that’s all there is to it.
In KH2, I’ve noticed that Sora is very, very quick to jump to conclusions and be a little shit with sassy comments flying out on pretty much every world he goes to. This is pretty unlike him and something that’s not shown in another game besides KH2. And I don’t think it’s because of bad writing/forgetting Sora’s character.
I think it’s because of Roxas.
Before Sora wakes up, we get to see Roxas finding out about himself and being forced back into Sora. There are only a couple of pieces of dialogue that are really important here:
Roxas: “I hate you so much!”
DiZ: “You should share some of that hatred with Sora. He’s far too nice for his own good.”
A lot of people think that during this point Roxas did return to Sora willingly. But look at his face once he sees Sora, listen to his voice. Roxas isn’t willing, he’s tired, he’s resigned. He wants to fight back but goddammit nothing works. And no one seems to want him to be here, and the only one who did was taken away.
So he gives up. He joins with Sora. But not the way DiZ wanted him to~ Because Roxas didn’t join with him willingly, Roxas and Sora are disjointed. Roxas can’t very well take control of Sora’s body or anything. But he is very much there and definitely aware of his surroundings.
It’s why Sora cries when leaving Twilight Town. Why he’s friendly with Axel despite the fact that Axel kidnapped Kairi, and why he’s so ruthless against the Organization.
Because Roxas has his memories of the Organization back now—or at least the ones he can remember—and he felt like everyone there was keeping things from him about himself. He knows they were using him. He’s still angry about it.
And because he and Sora didn’t merge the way they were supposed to, his anger leaks into Sora.
Did you ever notice that after the battle with Roxas Sora’s suddenly a lot better about controlling his anger? The person Sora’s really most angry at is Saix—because he kidnapped Kairi and held her prisoner. And even then, it’s nowhere close to where he was the rest of the game.
It’s because Roxas finally understood. He got to talk with Sora. Figure out why he had to be the one. Once it clicks, he’s at peace. He finally lets it go and his heart relaxes. His emotions don’t leak into Sora again. Because he was willing. He let himself merge because he was now okay with it.
THANK YOU
BLESS THIS POST AND BLESS KINGDOM HEARTS.
Yeah, KH is hard to grasp sometimes, but there’s some genuiely amazing, subtle writing in there. And I admire the series to pieces for that. I LOVE IT.
Little tidbits like that are everywhere; in the way Saix treats Axel, Xion and Roxas, in the way Ventus, Terra and Aqua interact with their surroundings, in Sora’s psychological state in Dream Drop Distance, in the entirety of Riku’s whole, freaking character arc… Kingdom Hearts is very much a fairytale, but not one working with archetypes, but with very layered, complex characters.
And it is to be admired for that beyond the Fandom’s giant faults, in my opinion.
I remember feeling like this when playing Kingdom Hearts 2.
See, I didn’t play Chain of Memories until afterwards (didn’t have a GBA) so I literally went Kingdom Hearts 1, then Kingdom Hearts 2. I remember starting 2 and thinking, “WTF where is Sora? Who is this? Why am I playing with him?!” But as I played with Roxas, he grew on me, then towards the end I started to really like him. I love Sora to pieces, but Roxas actually, you know, snapped and yelled and got pissed about stuff. Not to say that Sora has never been angry, but Roxas just… you know he reacted to things the way I would. You know, some guy tells you, essentially, you don’t matter. And Roxas gets pissed. He smashes shit, actually SMASHES SHIT! And I was like, “Hell yeah let’s do this Roxas fuck DiZ fuck him!”
Then he’s gone.
And when I got Sora back I… wasn’t happy. I mean yeah sure Sora, yay, love you, but… Roxas. Just… it’s over just like that? Not to mention that the game itself kinda made you miss Roxas in all sorts of ways. Sora has one keyblade, Roxas has two. Sora’s stats are back to square one. You have to start over. You don’t get to keep the nifty things you had for the past three hours, oh no. You’re Sora now, time to play from the beginning. Here’s these friends who knew Roxas and you have no idea who they are (feels). Here’s this organization and Roxas should be the one fighting them, not Sora. Sora has no idea what’s going on, Roxas does, this is his fight.
So it’s like… we the player felt that anger, too, and having moments where Sora was just a touch bit pissy, it was like, “… is that… is that Roxas? Roxas! You’re still here!”
After the second game they were handing this shit out like candy, so…

OT3! YES! CUTE!
813 Month Day 15 - Telephone (Word Prompt from roxasblamed)
Oh man just remembered I love these two *dies*
It surprised him at first when Avery brought over his old Game Station Box a couple of months ago. “Playstation 2,” Avery said in a wonderfully irritating tone of voice as he hooked up the cords to Gable’s T.V.
“And why is it at my place?”
“Because my new roommate is an alcoholic and I need to replay this game.”
“Replay?” Wasn’t the point of gaming to play something new? Weren’t they on the fifth Game Playing Box thing by now?
“Yes. They announced the sequel this summer, so I need to refresh my memory.”
“And when will you have time to play?”
“I dunno, whenever.”
Whenever has become scattered weekends when Avery isn’t reading lines, or if they’re not busy making Gable’s bed complain about boy on boy sex. Gable would much prefer sexual activities over watching the same damn cutscene for the fifth time. He rolls his eyes, “The weapons still make no sense.”
“You know, you asked me about the keyblade when I wore my Kingdom Hearts shirt back when we first met.”
“It still doesn’t make sense four years later. It also means that you played this game four years ago.”
Avery sighs. Gable insists on having this conversation every time this game comes up. “I told you, they announced a sequel. I need to replay it.”
“It took them four years to announce a sequel?”
“Longer than that. I played this back in high school.” Before Gable can respond Avery glares at him, “Don’t.”
“Don’t what?”
“Don’t start your rant about not understandin’ how I can wait so long for a sequel.”
“I also can’t understand how you’ve played this before and have lost four times.”
Fortunately, he’s at a point in his relationship where Avery’s little frustrated growls are sexy, not intimidating. Still, he raises his hands in defense and apologizes for his comment. He waits for Avery to face the screen and start his battle before he smirks and says, “So how can you kill something with a key?”
Avery lets out his loudest, most annoyed sigh. Why is it that discussing video games with his boyfriend feels like he’s presenting a complex thesis for a boring, numerical major that he doesn’t have? “It’s not technically killing, per se, it’s more… releasing the hearts.”
“Uh huh. Hearts. Kingdom Hearts, right?”
“I’m so done with you right now,” Avery mutters.

In which the couple in my upcoming book “Double Hue” consists of a gamer boy and a non-gamer who can’t understand why “Kingdom Hearts 3” being announced is a big deal.
So how many of us have had conversations like this in regards to video games? Oh by the way check out more writing fun times here:
or even better sora and the gang are the only ones that CAN’T see it so they get confused whenever the heath bar is brought up
I didn’t realized I needed this until now.
