The Inner Workings of a Chibi.

With the fight happening this weekend I’ve been thinking about this glow up a lot.

The “let them be kids” like doesn’t work for bnha because they want to be heroes.

They chose this. I’m pretty sure putting yourself in danger for others is in the job description

Like, they signed themselves up for this. They’re free to bail anytime they want. No one is forcing them

Yes they’re kids but they’re not kids who need protection

They’re kids who want to protect others

I have to fully and respectfully, with only the intent here of sharing my thoughts, disagree without exception.

These kids are indeed kids. Their brains are, scientifically, underdeveloped as 14,15,16 year olds. This is fact. They cannot in any way, shape, or form comprehend the pure violence, death, blood, and personal sacrifice they will have to put into this endeavor. They literally cannot and have no way of understanding this.

Their elders, teachers, Pro-Heroes do, because they’re adults and they know what’s coming. But their world needs Heroes, and the society has glamorized the world of being a Pro-Hero. It’s so easy for a child who is literally four to be told what a great hero they will be, and for them to think that’s all there is to this life.

They may have signed themselves up for this, but they certainly aren’t ‘free to bail’ in the constraints of their minds, and the way that society has nurtured and shaped them. Teenagers are gung-ho and sign up for war. Doesn’t mean their upcoming, inevitable trauma is deserved and necessary and they should have seen it coming

They are absolutely kids who need protection. The scene where Bakugou is finally saved from the villains and All Might speaks to him of how difficult it was to be brave? Bakugou is an inch away from bursting into tears. He is a child. He was a child who needed protection from experts, from adults - none of which he is. To throw an untrained fifteen year old in the world and say, “If you die it’s your fault for signing up for this” is something I must wholly disagree with.

They’re kids who want to protect others. And what we’ve seen with Izuku’s self destructive martyr-complex tendencies: these children have no idea how to protect themselves, let alone others. They barely just passed their provisional license exam.

Let the children have moments of childhood. Don’t be blackhearted and stingy because of the profression they have chosen. Their lives are a combination of nature and nurture. In the 50′s, people were raring to go to war, to fight the good fight, to protect their people. Does it mean they deserved to come home with PTSD and missing limbs, because they were sixteen year olds and should have known? No.

This isn’t war, but it’s battle. It’s bloodshed. Let them have their moments. Let them be protected by those who know better than them. Let them have good memories to remind them that this world isn’t just their fucking profession - a profession they haven’t even yet grown into.

Let them be kids DOES work in the world of BNHA, because they’re bound to have so very little of that in their lives. Cherish it, encourage it.

This is one of the things I love about BNHA. They may want to be heroes but the adults still remember they’re children. Izuku running off to sacrifice himself like a hero would. No. Aizawa won’t have that. Villains attacking the school? Stand back, children, this is serious. And you can tell he regrets them going through that when he’s talking during the sports festival. “Class 1-A has been through a lot.” They weren’t supposed to face that. Not yet. Because they’re children.

When Stain showed up they got in trouble for jumping in. When Bakugou got kidnapped they got scolded for going after him, and even the kids who didn’t go got reprimanded for not saying anything. They’re training to be heroes but they are still seen as children.

Just because you have a lofty goal doesn’t mean you revoke your childhood. If anything, you’re encouraged to enjoy it while you can. Unlike some series where kids turn to warriors and are mocked for wanting to relax (Sailor Moon), this series has the adults constantly telling the kids to take their time. Like yes, train, but stay in your lane. You aren’t a hero yet, more importantly, you aren’t an adult yet.

One thing I really like about BNHA is the constant acknowledgement of the fact that the shonen manga “I can do anything if I just push myself hard enough and refuse to ever rest or back down” mindset is incredibly self destructive.

Like. All Might is falling apart, physically. Midoriya, at just 15, has destroyed his body so many times that he risks paralysis every time he channels his power through his arms. Iida has severe nerve damage in one hand. And literally no one who cares about them is pretending that this is an acceptable way to be. Even the resident magic cure-all, Recovery Girl, can’t do enough to keep up with the damage they put themselves through, and in Midoriya’s case has threatened to stop healing him so as not to enable his self-destructive tendencies.

Plus, a lot of their character development revolves around learning NOT to be like that. Iida spends several arcs after his fight with Stain trying to atone for the trouble his recklessnes caused and trying to prevent Midoriya from getting into the same type of trouble. All Might has to learn to live as a civilian after he gives his power to Midoriya and then CONTINUES to push his body so far that he pretty much breaks. Midoriya develops a new fighting style, reevaulates his tendency to rush in, and learns to ask for help from the Support department in order to keep from destroying himself in the same way.

It’s honestly refreshing; I was a little sick of the Bleach-style “the hero can loose twice his weight in blood and be totally fine an episode later” type of storytelling.

This is a huge reason for why I love the series. Like you think it’s gonna go in that direction after the second episode but as soon as Midoriya gets to UA, his homeroom teacher is like, “Nope.”

And it’s not just the breaking of his body, it affects how people look at his potential, aka, barely any internship offers after the sports festival because what good is a hero who breaks himself?

Like, I love that the solution is NOT self-sacrifice. Like no, you can’t wreck your body for the win, even if there is a character who can heal you. Yes, you will lose your arms, think of something else. Yes, you have this god-like power but it comes with a price, so you better learn how to NOT kill yourself with it.

There’s no senzu beans here, Midoriya, and even if there were we’d limit your intake.

Bakugou: Hey nerd I got a game for you to play

Deku: Oh?

Bakugou: It’s got a bear, a bunny, a fox, and a chicken. It even takes place at a pizza place for kids

Deku: Cool! Sounds like fun!

Kirishima: Isn’t that-

Bakugou: Shut the fuck up shitty hair let me have this

Also my partner @snowtigra made me a Deku cake for my birthday my entire heart is full!!!

Boku No Hero Academia: Opening 1 VS Opening 5

Opening one has lyrics like “the day has come” and focuses on them being separate.

Opening five straight up says “make my story” and focuses on them coming together.

Listen I’m not sayin’ I’m just sayin’

But he’d panicked. Badly. He’d felt like he’d been drowning, caught in a net underwater with no hope of reaching the surface. He’d told himself to wave his hand at the crew to get them to release him, but he ended up trying to dig his fingers into the sludge in an attempt to remove it.

Made for a great shot, though. He remembers hearing someone say that it looked believable, like wow, that kid’s really gonna die.

Izuku didn’t have a way to nod his head, to say yes, I feel like I’m dying! But the real morbid thing is that he’s not sure if he would’ve said anything at all had he been able to talk. It was a good shot, perfect for All Might’s grand entrance and iconic Texas Smash. It’d be the first time seeing him in action after years of retirement so the scene had to be perfect. Yagi Toshinori was coming to rescue him of all people. After all the auditions, all the failures and frozen dinners, all the calls to his mother full of lies and false hope… Izuku Midoriya was here.

So Izuku forced himself to hold out for a little longer. Even if his throat burned. Even if his heart slowed to move at an unsteady crawl. Even if his eyes released real, genuine tears of absolute fear.

Somebody.

H-help…

Reblogging because THE NEXT CHAPTER IS UP and it takes a stab at the episode that made me fall in love with the series:

Izuku Midoriya’s idea of Netflix and Chill is Watching Random Documentaries and Taking Notes.
