Hi Sarah, I stumbled across your blog and I wanted to tell you I'm very impressed with both your work and sheer nerve. You have beautiful costumes and don't buckled in the face of trolldom. I quit cosplaying because of harassment, which sucks because I miss it. But I think I might be too old (I just turned 30 last month). It shouldn't matter, right? For what it’s worth, I’m 24 and I don’t intend on stopping anytime soon :) I mean, as people we generally dont come into real adult money until we’re in our mid-20’s anyway, so I feel like I’ve really just been able to break out of my cosplay shell in the last year.
Also, don’t let anyone stop you or make you feel like you can’t do something. Despite that I have to deal with trolly buttholes fairly frequently, I can tell you I receive 10 times that in overwhelming support for standing up for myself and doing what I love. So those people who are naysayers are in the minority.
So don’t be discouraged, do what you want!
Speaking as someone who just turned 30 in July? Cosplay to your heart’s content. I’m 30 and still dress like a Disney princess :) Age isn’t something that should discourage you from cosplay. Nothing should discourage you from cosplay.
Hell, my mom is about to turn 60 and has agreed to cosplay the villain from Princess and the Frog to match my Tiana if we go to a con together next year. She’s really excited about it and she loves what we do. I talk to her about our costumes and how we makes them, and I talk to her about my art and my writing, and she loves all of it. She’s my biggest fan! And she wants to be part of this whole thing.
So yeah, 30? Puhleeeze! One of my favorite cosplays that I saw at ACEN this last year was an elderly man dressed as Mario who turned his walker into Mario’s kart. So yeah, 30 ain’t nothin’, you’ve only just begun :)
I would be so happy if you got to go to ACEN. I have such wonderful ideas of us hanging out and having Chicago pizza and having fun and gushing about Naoto and things (though in reality we'd probably be really busy with you doing your GeekLurv thing and me doing artist alley but still we'd at least say hi and maybe hug and say we love Naoto before parting ways).

Actually I don’t think GeekLurv is intending on running tables/events outside of TX area conventions — so I’d literally just be doing promo work by walking around and handing out business cards. So I’m sure we could hang out some :)
ACEn isn’t a for-sure thing ATM, it was more like…up for discussion last I heard. They need to lock it down and I need to make sure I can get off for school and stuff.
I hope this is a thing that happens :) It would be so awesome to meet Naoto Shirogane… urm, Sarah Fong. Same thing, right?

hi guys! this is a comic i made for a final in my comics in literature class. we had to do a research paper on a topic we’d discussed in class and then accompany it with a comic with a relevant subject. my paper was about hyper-sexualization of women in comic books, but i decided to broaden it out here as well as personalize it and make myself the subject and discuss something i’ve been subjected to in the convention circuit and on the internet as well as thousands of other women, as well as give a cue to thought about how the comic book industry as well as the video game industry and even just media in general (all of which are male dominated) push such ridiculous pressures onto girls and women.
also, it feels kind of silly to have to add this since i hope it’s obvious, but i am very aware that there are men that don’t subscribe to this attitude, and am incredibly grateful that these issues are brought to light to people other than the ones that are subjected to it.
anyway haha i have literally been staring at this for 9 hours i don’t even know which direction is up anymore. thanks for reading!!!

Yes this. Don’t get discouraged about cosplaying a character because someone else does it and you think “they did it so much better than me.” Don’t get discouraged because someone is more “successful.” Cosplay is about having fun, and like Sarah says, there’s no rule that says “there can be only one” cosplayer for a character or for anything.
Also, if you DO want to become “popular” or “successful” with cosplay, you do have to put yourself out there. You do have to try. You can’t just say, “Nope not gonna do it,” because you see someone else doing a cosplay you want to do and they have a lot of likes. Cosplay is about emulating the character you like, and 99.9 percent of the time you aren’t the only person who likes that character, so there will be other cosplayers.
For example, I love Tiana. There are a bunch of Tiana cosplayers who I think do an amazing job. Better than me, even. They’re beautiful, they’re skinny, their make up is better, whatever reason. But hey, I love Tiana, I love cosplaying Tiana, and I love the dress my wifey made for me. So I’m going to wear it, and be the best Tiana I can be. I’m not going to be discouraged because someone else does it.
So all and all, just… cosplay who you want, and have fun with it :)
FUTURE COSPLAY PLANS! Now that Guilty Gear is getting a new game I see that Millia has a new cute outfit with a cute hat and I’d want a super long wig or something with roses in it I dunno but MUST DO THIS!
