Story Snippet: Treat Me Kindly

brichibiwritesthings:

Wow, I’ve hit 100 posts, yay! Now that Anime Detour is over and new followers have been acquired, I thought I would post a new snippet to the book.  I’m in the first round of edits right now and am about halfway done  :)

Warnings:  Gruesome imagery

Scene:  From chapter six

Story so far:  Matthew Sharpton went to an animal auction and brought home a bird, but that bird has the strange ability to turn human.  She only asks that she is “treated kindly,” and then she will do the same for hew new master.  Unfortunately, Matthew’s father has other plans for the lovely Ms. Jazzmyn, but those plans don’t go the way he thinks they will.

It’s been a while, but here’s a new snippet from the book  :)

Here it is!  The pre-sale for the anthology I wrote for is now up!  Follow the link for prices on the entire anthology and/or the individual stories.  Yay!

To celebrate, here’s a fun snippet:

This next game, Lukis realizes, is a rather strange one.  He doesn’t bother trying to play.  Instead, he watches as Aaron fights against someone else.  Lukis wonders, as he watches the intro video, why high school students are even allowed to fight with swords and strange monsters that they summon.  Don’t they have parents?  And since when can bears talk, fight, and smoke cigars?  Was that a robot just now?  With an axe?

“Told ya it was completely different,” Aaron says, picking some kid that uses a gun and has some sort of fly as a monster friend.

It’s still exciting to watch, Lukis thinks.  Aaron’s fighting against some tall, buff guy who uses a folding chair as a weapon — that makes no sense, either, who brings a chair to a gun fight?

YAY!

brichibiwritesthings:

O.K. So bookmarks are actually pretty spendy to have made, especially for the amount I want for our tables at conventions. But my wonderful partner gave me the idea of making business cards with my writing blog listed on it, for now, and then when the book comes out I can splurge for bookmarks and put links on where it can be purchased :)  This would hopefully gain followers at conventions, where I can talk about the book and tease at it, and the blog would have links of where the book can be purchased anyway  :)

So here’s what I’m thinking for the cards. The snippet on the back is from a crime scene in the book ^^  I thought it would be best to pick a crime scene of some sort to get people interested.

Thoughts?

Reblogging for advertising myself!  Be sure to follow the writing blog for more details  :)

Treat Me Kindly Excerpts

brichibiwritesthings:

So as I go through the process of filling out the Author Form to my book (which is a deceptively short form but, in reality, it’s a lot of work!) I’m stuck on which excerpt I should use.  This excerpt will be on the inside cover of the book.  The ones I’m posting are the two I’m trying to choose from.  I’d like to keep “The Invitation” before both of them.

The first excerpt happens relatively early in the story, while the second happens later.  It’s job is to get the reader interested, hence why I’m coming to you all  :)  you’re my test subjects, there will be cake at the end of this test.

1.  Invitation

Anyone from pauper to peasant can purchase a dog or a cat.  Why should you lower yourself to such a standard?  I would like to invite you to browse through animals for your more refined taste.  This invitation is for those who are interested in one of a kind animals who will speak to the prestigious title they have built for themselves.  These animals break away from those pale and boring common breeds with their rare, exotic beauty.  These animals will allow you to enjoy something that’s truly magnificent.  Treat yourself and come find an animal that truly matches the life of luxury that you live.

“You…y-you…” He doesn’t want to say it because it’s too ridiculous to say.  His life isn’t some low budget sci-fi movie — or would this be fantasy?  Whatever it may be it certainly isn’t, this is real life and birds do not-…no, no no no not going there.  Matthew quickly squashes that train of thought.  He begins to look around the room.  Where did that bird go?  It has to be somewhere!  Maybe sleeping behind the water heater?  Maybe nesting in his pile of dirty clothes?  He slides out of the bed, frantically looking around the basement.

This can’t be happening.  This cannot be happening!

The woman sits up and continues to quietly watch him before she finally speaks, her voice soft and soothing, “Master?  What exactly are you looking for?”

Matthew stops digging through the laundry, holding a pair of socks in his hands.  Did the woman just call him… “Master?”

“Why yes.  That is what you are.  I belong to you.”

“What… the hell…”

No one says anything to Alex, letting him watch as the wings start to slip into Zahra’s back.  Her skin literally tears apart, ripping itself like sharp knives cutting into flesh.  There’s no blood when Alex really thinks there needs to be.  The woman isn’t screaming when she should be crying out in pain.  Zahra simply stands perfectly still, arms crossed over her breasts as her wings fold in on themselves, trying to become comfortable between shoulder blades and back bones.  The open inside of her back is a mess from the blue of her wings and hints of bone, like she’s been dissected and left on the table.

He says it again, “What…the…” but in seconds Zahra’s body starts to shift again.  Her broken skin starts to stitch itself together, filling in the gaps until her back is whole again.  It sticks out a little, as if it can’t quite contain the wings but it doesn’t bother Zahra at all.

“It’s like a cocoon,” Sandi whispers, sounding completely fascinated with the entire event.  She walks over, gently touching the woman’s back.  Bumpy, and she can feel the wings constantly moving and shifting underneath Zahra’s skin, “This is amazing.”

“This is weird as fuck!”  Alex screams, “What was that just now?!”

Heroes

brichibiwritesthings:

Why couldn’t he be like those cartoon heroes

That they’d watch together on Saturday mornings

Who hid that impenetrable behind a suit jacket

Or keep nifty gadgets in a bright, yellow belt

Why couldn’t he a hero from Japan

That could create a blaze of blue fire between his fingertips

Who shouted out outrageous commands ka me…

Before he released the destruction from the palms of his hands

Why couldn’t he be a ranger of justice

Who transformed with a morpher and coin

Who knew all sorts of martial arts

And called on prehistoric robots that created something mega

Why couldn’t he be like the 8-bit heroes

Who could touch a flower and burn things to a crisp

Who could grab a leaf and fly high into the sky

Who could jump on a turtle use its shell as a weapon

Instead

He’s breathing out his last life

Wondering why

He couldn’t be any of those heroes

Who would never leave her behind

Notes:  Urm… yeah, I’ve been thinking about my big brother lately and this is what came out of that.  I’ve written something like this before quite some time ago, but from my point of view, not his.  So… here?

I’m not sure why its angst day at the writing blog, but apparently it is.  You’re all invited?

[Book snippet] Treat Me Kindly

brichibiwritesthings:

Like how I’m calling it a book now?  ^^

Anyhow, I’ve signed the contract, which makes this official.  This is going to be a published book this year  :)

Here’s a bit of an interesting background which, when this book gets famous *fingers crossed* will probably make people laugh or disturb them.

This was a fanfic.

This was an unfinished alternate universe Naruto fanfic.  I’m sure the fic is still posted somewhere, too.  Naruto was a fox, Sasuke ended up taking him home, just… yeah.  The fic itself made it about five chapters, with some side chapters that were just for the characters to have smutty fun times.

This story is completely different from the fic.  The fic wasn’t a detective novel at all.  The only thing I kept from the fic is the first line in the story, the birds, and one of the characters that I had made up myself, and even that character has changed in which he has a mother and father, not just a father, and a closer relationship to the pet he gets.

So… yeah, it’s amazing what fanfiction can do, yeah?

Anyhow, the general synopsis of the book is this:

Detective Alex Sampson is working on a case where an ex-rockstar was found dead in his condo.  The strange part is, the only sign of him being hurt is a small wound on his neck and a butterfly that was found at the scene of the crime.  It looks like the victim was poisoned, except butterflies aren’t poisonous, and this particular butterfly is supposed to be extinct.

It turns out that there’s prestigious auctions going on where the rich and glamorous bid on rare animals.  The animals actually have the ability to turn human and are more than willing to be obedient pets… so long as they’re treated kindly.  When they’re not, things tend to take a turn for the brutal and gruesome.  But as Alex gets closer to the truth, it’s harder to place blame on the quote, unquote, “killers.”  On the one hand, killing people is absolutely wrong, but on the other hand these animals were pushed to the point of lashing out.

So whose to blame?

In this snippet I’m posting, Alex’s friend who works at the police station, Nicholas, has gotten into the auctions thanks to an ex-boyfriend who is part of that wealthy crowd.  He gets to take a dog home, and this scene shows exactly why you need to treat these animals with respect.

Enjoy!

Look guys, its a snippet from my book.  That’s right, my book!  It’s going to be a book!  And the back story of it’s creation reveals how much of a geek I really am  ^^;;;  don’t judge me Naruto was good once

Some geeky writing thingamajigs

brichibiwritesthings:

One thing I really like to do in stories is to have some geeky nods to stuff, but not by blatantly saying what that geeky thing is, but describing it.  This way, if readers get it they (hopefully) get a good laugh, and if readers don’t it doesn’t pull away from the story too much.  Also, I don’t like directly naming things, because I feel like it dates the story?  Like if I say, “he sat down and played Super Mario Brothers for the first time” you think, “It must be the 80s,” depending on which Mario it is of course.  Instead, I like to say, “he took control of a brave little plumber who could, with the touch of a flower, feel the fire between his fingertips,” or something like that.

I’m working on some things for an anthology that I hope gets chosen that has a lot of this.  I like to call it, “How many fandoms can I name without directly naming them.”

Story 1.  Troy thinks that, maybe — once upon a time — he thought that Aimee would grow out of this play at costuming.

Cosplay she always corrects him with an exasperated sigh.

It started too many years ago with Aimee making a thrown together costume of a girl who carried around a basket of flowers, only to be stabbed by some silver-haired jackass.  He’s misunderstood, Troy she had said and you would look great as the blond who fights him in the end.

And being the good friend that he is, he had agreed.  At least the sword had been cool even if the hair made absolutely no sense.

Back then she had cared deeply about the negative comments about her skill and size, so much so that Troy perfected glaring at the mean-spirited folks they would run across.  And, like a good friend, he encouraged her to keep doing what she loved.

Had he known that he’d be dragged along for the ride… no, he thinks he would still encourage her… maybe.

Now she dresses up as so many characters that sometimes he forgets what she actually looks like.  Of course, she’s come a long way since grabbing whatever she could at the local thrift store.  From the video game princesses who get kidnapped too many times to the colorful fairies who collect children’s teeth — ugh, why is Aimee so girly? — she’s put so much work into the costumes she makes that she has made a bit of a name for herself, a big name actually, one that allows her to do this for a living.

It’s not her skills he protests to.  It’s the crowd that comes along with it.

Troy doesn’t like to brag — and actually, he never does — but he is pleasant to look at.  He likes to lift weights and likes his piercings, always keeping one in his nose and a couple of hoops in his ears.  He also likes his tattoos, both arms decorated in wisps of black ink that look like physical representations of the wind.  For some reason, his appearance never catches the eye of the right person.  It’s never the cute guy who approaches him at these… conventions… but the swarm of girls — some underaged — who want to, quote, “Oh Em Gee” hug him.  He’s also not a huge fan of the geeky world Aimee immerses herself in.  Sure, he’ll watch a movie with a hot guy who carries around a hammer from time to time, but hell if he knows the name of the team he’s a part of.

Story 2. There’s a look on Wally’s face, a mix of shock peppered with anger, as he looks over at Mitchel.  Mitchel deflects the look, not seeming to realize — or care — about his damning words of not worrying about the wi-fi situation.  Jayson sighs and lays back on the bed, cap falling off of his head and resting against the pillow.  He had borrowed it from Wally, not having been awake enough this morning to attempt to apply the necessary amount of hair-gel to get his hair slicked back in the way he likes it.  There’s a circular logo on it along with a company name.  He knows that Wally has explained it before — something about science and combustible lemons — but the details escape him at the moment.  He should probably try to remember, Wally likes it when he remembers gaming details and it’s much better than listening to the inevitable argument that’s about to start between the guy he use to play in the sandbox with twenty some years ago and the guy he likes to see naked.

“Wi-fi is important.  I told ya, when ya booked the trip, to make sure the place has wi-fi.”

“And that’s not important right now.  We’re on vacation.”

“Not import-… n-not important?!”

Something about portal guns, Jayson thinks, and a bitchy robot lady and cake.

I’m writing some things.  Random nonsensical geeky things.  That hopefully turn into things.  Also check out my writing blog thing.  Things!

brichibiwritesthings:

Going along with this post here (particularly the second part).

Warnings:  GLBT, coming out

Inspiration:  I saw something that asked about the hardships people go through who are in the GLBT community.  There are two kinds of hardships, to me.  There’s the hate we always see, the slurs and bashing and whatnot, and then there’s the stuff that this piece is about.  Sometimes it’s the quieter words that are the most harmful.  A lot of times kids/teenagers are told that they’re “too young” to understand things when adolescence is, to me, the most judgmental time of a person’s life.

There’s times when someone feels like they get it and they’re flat out told “no” if it doesn’t fit “the norm,” that they’re “too young” and “don’t get it,” which I think, in a way, is just as damaging as the blatant ”in your face” hate because people don’t realize how harmful it is, they think they’re doing something good in saying such things, and a lot of times… they’re not.  The worst part is that they honestly do mean well, you know?  Parents mean well, they want what’s best for their children, so they honestly do think that saying such things is not only o.k., but necessary.

So, here’s my pieces, for now.  It’s ongoing and just me putting words together, really, that I might put together into a thing later.

[Original Story Snippet] Treat Me Kindly

brichibiwritesthings:

This story means a lot to me.  It’s the first original story I’ve completed of this length and the one I’ve been trying to get published.  At the moment, there’s actually a publisher interested and I’m reading over the contract, so yay!  It’s come a long way, like most writings tend to do.  I actually started it back in college, got to about chapter five I believe, and then… everything changed — including my style of writing.  The main character is completely different than he was before, the ending is different, there’s characters who weren’t there before… it’s just all a part of the writing process.

This scene snippet takes place about, hmmm… close to the hallway mark, I’d say.  I hope you all enjoy it, and look forward to seeing it published *keeps fingers crossed about that*

Quick Summary:  It’s just another dead ex-rockstar for detective Alex Sampson.  When Frank Marko is found dead in his luxury condo, police find that the only clue to his untimely demise is a small butterfly resting by the body.  It turns out that there’s an auction that happens in the city where the wealthy and glamorous get together and bid on rare animals.  However, these animals hold a secret: they can turn human like us.  These pets are more than willing to be loyal and obedient, but there’s one rule you must always follow by:

Treat them kindly.  Or else.

Genre:  Urban Supernatural, Mystery, Crime Thriller

Warnings:  (for this part)  blood, gore, disturbing imagery, violence

Random Note:  This story is probably the most violent thing I’ve ever written.  Oddly enough, my mother absolutely loves it, lol!
