There seems to be this idea that poc wanting to create safe spaces for their own people is segregation. No honey, segregation is when you beat my grandfather nearly to death when he entered in a whites only entrance.

Seriously do people not realize what the word “safe” means?

Safe means that you need a place where you don’t feel scared, not “I’m better than you so you go and use that crappy water fountain over there.”

Furthermore, do people think we like the fact that we need to set up safe places when it’s almost 2016? Do they not get how tragic it is to hear stories from our parents and grandparents about how terrible the world was because they were around during actual, legalized segregation? Do they not get how heartbreaking it is to see their faces when they realize that my generation and younger generations are still facing that bullshit today, only now, people can disguise it with “we had the Civil Rights Movement, we’re fine, so stop making it about race.”

Honestly, do people think we want these safe places and black movements to be necessary? More than anyone else we want to be able to say “this stuff is unnecessary, we’re fine.” But guess what? We don’t have the luxury of wearing those blinders.

We can’t afford to.

It is true that the cosplayers who do this generally aren’t slapping on shoe polish or anything that takes them to that offensive level, and they (and their supporters) are always quick to point that out. They’re quick to use words like “appreciation,” as in, they love and appreciate the character so much that they just want to do a good job representing them. They aren’t trying to mock them, but pay homage to them. They aren’t really doing “blackface” because they’re using proper makeup techniques and they don’t look like they’ve just dipped their faces in oil.

But here’s the thing. At the end of the day, those people? They can take the make-up off. They can stop being black.

We can’t.

So I’ll be completely honest, it was both very difficult to wait to weigh in on this, but I knew this article was going up today so I didn’t want to say my thoughts until it went up (since it covers all of my feelings on the subject), and… I was kind of nervous to even write this piece because when this issue comes up, there is a lot of backlash toward people who are against painting your skin. I watched friends get belittled and saw people just trample over their feelings, and I’m not just talking followers, I’m talking about friendships just collapsing because they didn’t want to hear what their black friend had to say.

Before I wrote this I considered either a) not writing it at all or b) just posting something on my page and that being the end of it. But then my frustrations of this being a yearly thing took over and I sat down, looked at as many comments as I could stomach, the different articles, and everything I could before I got my thoughts together and wrote this up in an attempt to break down every reason given that tries to justify changing your skin to represent a different race.

Everything I feel on this issue is in this article, so if you want to know what I think, then all you have to do is read it. If you do decide to comment, I ask that you be respectful to me or anyone else who comments, even if they don’t agree with you. I don’t expect everyone to agree with me, but if we’re going to make any sort of progress, I do hope that people will at least listen.

The real world.

This is from That’s So Raven, where Chelsea and Raven apply to work at the same clothing shop. Chelsea is white; Raven is black. Chelsea gets the job, despite being utterly horrible at it, while Raven, who has a deep interest in fashion and knows how to handle clothes, does not. The girls find this deeply suspicious, so Chelsea wears a hat with a camera on it and questions the employer. The employer admits what she does in the gif above and Chelsea and Raven submit the footage to a news station.

And THAT is why That’s So Raven is the best TV show ever.

That’s not even the only reason why it was the best show ever

There was a series in the 90s called “Smart Guy” that did the same kind of thing in regards to racism, and it was hella satisfying, because it had a scene of a black guy walking into the store and the white manager started following him around, he asked if she had a problem and she was all, “Oh no, nothing at all,” but kept following him.  He then said something about getting a call from a girl (main girl in the series) about how the manager followed black people around/wanted her employees to follow black people around, and then proceeded to drop the bomb of, “I’m your regional manager,” or something in that regard of, “I’m way above you on the corporate ladder and you are about to lose your job.”

I miss kid shows doing stuff like this, more importantly, I miss kid shows having the culprits pay for their racist behavior, because it not only showed that racism was bad, but it showed that it would not be tolerated and the guilty parties would be held accountable for their actions, and their actions would be punished.

Racism is Kylie Jenner getting locs and it being consdidered “edgy”, but when Zendaya gets them she “probably smells like patchouli oil or weed”

Here is Zendaya’s brilliant response to the comments Giuliana Rancic made about her locs.  As one of my friends said, this is why we get so mad.

So I love the notion that cosplay is for everyone, it really is, and I actually love when people realize the hate that goes on in the community and try and do something about it, that’s really great.

But what I get frustrated at, more so than the hate, is the blindness.

I saw a post that said something along the lines of, “Why is it that when white cosplayers cosplay outside their race, they get bashed, but when people of color do it, they get praised?”  And just… h-huh?

Now, I’m not saying that it doesn’t happen, I’ve seen it happen, but from my experience it’s more of a, “Why are you cosplaying a person of color when you have so many choices and we have so few?”  From my experience it’s a genuine feeling, because I feel like when we do see people of color in our geekery we get so excited because there’s not that much representation, so there’s this moment of, “FINALLY!”  Now I personally don’t mind who cosplays what, but I’m not going to pretend that when I saw Tiana for the first time my thoughts weren’t, “OMG,” and, “FINALLY,” and, “GONNA COSPLAY THE HELL OUT OF THAT,” and even, “A princess for me after all these years!”  It’s a thing that happens, because representation is important, I can tell when I see that little black girl staring up at me when I wear Tiana, and her dad is smiling just as brightly because… finally!  So I get it, and I hope white cosplayers can see where the “bashing” comes from.  It’s not so much “bashing” as it is… disappointment?  But ultimately its your cosplay, and my only advice is to be respectful about it, and just understand where those feelings are coming from. And, for the most part, I think white cosplayers do get it, and understand, some have even asked me my opinion on the matter to which I say, “Do what you want, just be respectful, and understand why someone might have an issue.” Cosplay is about showing love for a character you love, and we should respect each other along the way.

Which leads me to the other part of that statement I quoted in the beginning because… since when have people of color NOT been bashed for cosplaying outside their race?  I wish, WISH, I could stop seeing ignorant posts in regards to black cosplayers cosplaying outside their race… or cosplaying in general. This is what I consider blindness.  In the argument of “one gets bashed more than the other” that is just some serious “I choose not to see the truth” because there can’t even be black fanart without some harsh comments.  And, in my experience, the hateful comments I see are bashing, straight up bashing. Where a person of color may be like, “Why cosplay that one character when there’s a million others,” the comments I see on the flip side are all about “ghetto” versions of characters, or “nigga” versions of characters, or terrible fried chicken jokes, or watermelon jokes, or just a wide variety of racist statements.  There’s no, “Why cosplay Belle when you can cosplay Tiana,” it’s a flat out “har har ghetto princess” with no purpose other than to hurt the cosplayer.

So yeah, if you think that people of color don’t get hated on for, well, being people of color… I’m here to tell you that that’s not the case.  Sadly, it happens, a lot, it happens too much, and it needs to stop.  It’s nice to think that everything is right with the world but… it’s not the truth.  The truth is that we are working on it, and are always aiming to make things better, and to highlight why such comments are uncalled for and to promote the fact that cosplay is for everyone, key word being everyone.  And I genuinely think that people do want this, they do want cosplay to be this thing that everyone does, but in order to do that you have to take the blinders off.

The hate is real, and it needs to stop.

To all the people thinking black folk are overreacting about Exodus

TO ALL THE WHITE WONDERBREAD WHINERS:
The whole point of Annie being a freckle faced redheaded boisterous orphan was that she was stereotyped as completely undisirable because of her ethnicity (Irish people used to face a lot of hatred), her personality (loud, vocal, open and honest), and her looks (freckles and red hair was considered to be extremely unattractive at the time that Annie was originally concieved). Redheaded people were often stereotyped as troublemakers with loud mouths and behavioral problems, and girls and women with red hair are often considered to be sexually “devious”, or more sexually mature at a younger age. These were reasons that people wouldn’t adopted redheaded freckle faced children who were probably Irish. They were considered unattractive, troublemakers, loud, and had “bad blood” and would probably become every negative stereotype for the Irish one could conjure. Now, in a time when racial representation is (slowly) growing, they chose a little black girl to replace the little ginger girl in this modern adaptation because guess what? Black children are often left to languish in the system now for the same reasons that ginger kids used to languish in orphanages then. Little black girls have all the same stereotypes slapped on them. Black children are labled as “thugs”, as “ghetto”, they’re labled as troublemakers and loudmouths; and face it- in white dominated media, as shown above, black is considered “unattractive”.
Black Annie is a true underdog now, whereas a redheaded frecklefaced child would be considered attractive (thanks very much in part to the original Annie, honestly). It is the same story, but with the real underdog orphan of this time.

White people claiming that POCs freaking out over Exodus is stupid OBVIOUSLY have never taken geography. Ramases was brown. Moses was brown. IT TOOK PLACE IN EGYPT. EVERYONE WAS BROWN OR BLACK. THEY ALL WERE PEOPLE OF COLOR. BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW IF YOU’VE FUCKING NOTICED, BUT EGYPT IS IN AFRICA. They literally changed the entire story by using white people, let alone the fact that MOSES NEVER LED THE HEBREWS INTO BATTLE, NEVER CARRIED A SWORD, NEVER PERSONALLY ENGAGED RAMASES THROUGH HIS OWN POWER.
Changing race in Annie was necessary to demonstrate truthfullness- redheaded freckle faced children are no longer underdogs in the adoption world, black children are. Changing race in Exodus was not necessary to demonstrate truthfulness and in fact essentially destroys a cornerstone of faith for millions of people worldwide, not only christians, but muslims and jews too. Moses and Ramases are part of all three of those faiths, and making them white and everyone else white is a slap in the face and was completely unnecessary in relaying the story.

The fact that this is even an issue makes me wann areach out and touch somebody. It’s Rue all over again. I wanna puke.

All of those tweets are pretty much making all of the points in the above response valid, the whole, “black children languish in the system,” because they’re unwanted for stereotypical reasons.  All of those tweets prove those words right.  These people can’t even handle a little girl in a movie.  These people are reducing her to a “nappy head parasite infected nigger,” as said so eloquently in one of the above tweets.  How do you think these people feel about black youth if they can’t even handle a recasting?  A recasting that makes perfect sense given the reasons why the original Annie was left to be an orphan.  But hey, who cares about logic, a black child is in a movie let’s bitch!

but it’s not about race right?

Woah

This is the master post of the new millennium showcasing racism and white supremacy at its finest.

Please stop telling us it’s not about race and to move on cause IT IS and WE WONT until justice is served and equality is established!

I was talking to someone on Facebook about this whole notion of us “making it about race” and people “tired of hearing about it” and like… I’ll stop talking about it when it stops being a thing, you know?  Because, truthfully, I DO want to stop talking about it, I want it to stop being an issue. Do people really think that black people really, truly, honestly want to constantly deal with racism?  Cuz I don’t know about you but I’d much rather live my life peacefully.  But I can’t, because shit like this keeps happening, and even worse, when it does happen we keep being told “it’s nothing.”

And what kills me is so many people want equality, so many people wish that we were equal and want to know what they can do to help.  And here we are, giving the answers, and we keep being ignored because “it’s not about race” or even “all lives matter” as if trying to tell someone that they matter after a tragedy means we’re excluding people.  We have to tell black people that they matter because people keep telling them that they don’t, even after death they’re “thugs” in the eyes of the world.  That is why “black lives matter.”

Why do we keep talking about it?  Because you keep ignoring it.  Maybe if you start speaking with us changes can be made for the better and the conversations can come to an end.  Until then, it’s going to keep being brought up.

There are going to be a lot of emotions today. As always, do NOT belittle someone’s feelings. Do not tell anyone that they are overreacting. That is never ever going to solve anything and will only cause more hurt. If you see someone posting about it do not remind them of the verdict and what it means, because honestly, they already know. Let them have their reaction. Let them be concerned for black youth in this country. This is a legitimate concern to have. This is not the first incident. This is not the first time we’ve been through this and there are several, several, several cases that have gone unheard, or if they have been heard, this has been the result.

Be respectful today, and every other day. This is not a day to come over and point to facts and remind people of verdicts and “justice” being served, this is a day to be respectful of people’s feelings and worries, because they’re far from being invalid. Also, if you see someone posting “Black Lives Matters” do not, for the love of everything, respond with “All Lives Matter.” We know. We know that. We KNOW that.

No one is suggesting that we exclude others, we are asking that you start including us and treating us like people instead of criminals because of the color of our skin.

If you respond with “All Lives Matter” you are missing the point completely.

Racism is a very real thing. If you can’t understand why I would post about it but support my plus size posts, then I don’t really have much to say, because as much as I am fat I am also very much black, and racism is very real, and to me this is yet another black youth on the ever growing list.

Please respect my feelings and everyone else’s feelings today. I know you’re capable of it, and I know you are all an understanding and loving group of people who I am thankful to have supporting me. A lot of people are going to need support today, so please show that same consideration that you always do.
