Once upon a time, back in October 2013, I wrote an article about plus sized cosplay for xoJane.  I also fried chicken and posted pictures online. So let’s talk about that chicken! 

So now I have a Wordpress account.  Let the ranting begin!

Ah, good times.

Something I will never understand is this mindset to “stop whining.”  Like, if someone is making fun of you, aren’t you supposed to stand up for yourself? With the cosplay article and stuff I’ve been told a few times (very few) to “stop whining” because that just fuels the haters more.  Why is the expectation to just sit quietly, take in the nasty comments, and not say or do anything?  

Granted, I didn’t say anything directly to the person who hated on me, but I did, at least, do something.  There’s some people who just aren’t worth the effort because they’re literally just there to make you feel bad.  But I could at least, you know, respond in my own way.  I wrote an article and I fried some chicken.  I said some stuff to show that, you know, this kind of thing happens, but that shouldn’t stop you from going out there and being you.  How is that “whining” at all?  I’ve been told to “own up to my fat” and like, I never once said that I didn’t?  I know what I am, and I flat out said that.    

Also, telling someone not to complain and whine isn’t helpful.  Everyone reacts differently to things.  Such nasty comments don’t bother me because I already have been called a bunch of names growing up, but there’s people who aren’t like me.  There’s people who are affected by words, and you telling them to “stop whining” isn’t going to solve anything.  They’re not going to magically be like, “Yeah, you’re right, I’m fat I should be proud.”  I wasn’t like that before.  It’s not like I was magically some woman who fried chicken in the face of my haters, no.  It takes time to gain confidence, and there’s nothing wrong with it taking time.  It’s not o.k. to look down on a plus sized person who gets upset about being called names.  How is that going to help them?  “Just shut up and laugh it off,” how is that encouraging at all?  That’s just going to make someone feel worse, because not only are they suddenly “a fat whale” according to some asshole, but according to you they cry too much. According to you they’re just looking for sympathy and need to suck it up and move on.  But, not everyone can move on, and you’re not going to help by trying to shove them forward.    

You don’t fix a negative with a negative.

Should you be ashamed of who you are?  No, of course not, you should love yourself.  But the way you get someone to feel that love is by encouragement, and frankly, being called a cry baby isn’t encouraging.  That article wasn’t looking for sympathy, at no point was I like, “I got made fun of whoa is me,” it was flat out, “Hey I got made fun of, it happens, but that shouldn’t stop you from doing what you love.  There are a lot of people out there who will love what you do, so go out there and be you.”  I mean for fuck’s sake, I fried chicken over it.  I don’t need sympathy, and I’m not whining.  I’m speaking my mind and telling others to not be afraid to cosplay because some asshole wants to call them names.  But, at the same time, if it takes someone a minute to be at the level of confidence you want them to be at, then please, give them a minute.  Eventually, they’ll be able to “laugh it off” and enjoy how wonderful they are, but if they can’t do that right this second, that’s fine too.

1. My odds of being hired for a job, when competing against female applicants, are probably skewed in my favor. The more prestigious the job, the larger the odds are skewed.
2. I can be confident in the fact that my co-workers won’t think that I was hired/promoted because of my sex - despite the fact that it’s probably true.
3. If I ever am promoted when a woman of my peers is better suited for the job, it is because of my sex.
4. If i ever fail at my job or career, it won’t be seen as a blacklist against my sex’s capabilities.
5. I am far less likely to face sexual harassment than my female peers.
6. If I do the same task as a woman, and if the measurement is at all subjective, chances are people will think I did a better job.
7. If I am a teen or an adult, and I stay out of prison, my odds of getting raped are relatively low.
8. On average, I’m taught that walking alone after dark by myself is less than dangerous than it is for my female peers.
9. If I choose not to have children, my masculinity will not be questioned.
10. If I do have children but I do not provide primary care for them, my masculinity will not be questioned.
11. If I have children and I do care for them, I’ll be praised even if my care is only marginally competent.
12. If I have children and a career, no one will think I’m selfish for not staying at home.
13. If I seek political office, my relationship with my children or who I deem to take care of them will more often not be scrutinized by the press.
14. My elected representatives are mostly people of my own sex. The more prestigious the position, the more this is true.
15. When i seek out “the person in charge", it is likely that they will be someone of my own sex. The higher the position, the more often this is true.

17. As a child, I could choose from an almost infinite variety of children’s media featuring positive, active, non-stereotyped heroes of my own sex. I never had to look for it; male protagonists were (and are) the default.

While I love the entire list, I think number 47 is the one I love the most, because it’s true.  I feel like as a black plus sized woman I’m immediately told what obstacles are in my way, by family, friends, society, everyone.  And while my loved ones will encourage me to be me, as a kid I already knew that there would be things in my way.

Interestingly enough, I knew it was mostly because of my race.  I think that’s what happens when you’re black.  There’s nothing wrong with that, there’s nothing wrong with your family talking to you about race and how people may look at you and assume things.  But honestly, I didn’t have a clear picture of female obstacles until college.  I remember when I decided to take Women’s Studies the response wasn’t, “Oh that’s cool,” and it wasn’t even, “Ugh you’re just going to hate men,” it was, “Why aren’t you taking African American Studies?”  It’s not that I don’t think it’s important, but I had spent 18 years learning about African American things.  I grew up in Chicago, it was all around me, whether it was because it was February, or because my family was talking to me, or hell because a new movie came out about it.  There’s more aspects to me than “black” and if Black History is important because of who I am, Women’s Studies should be important too.  But to some people I was betraying my race because I chose Women’s Studies.

And don’t get me started on when I took Queer Studies for a semester.  

The sad thing about things like “Queer Studies” or being plus sized is that since these are things that people feel you can change, some people tell you about the hardships of it to discourage you.  "It’s not easy being gay you’ll be this and this and this,“ or, "You should lose weight because of this and this and this.”  It’s sort of the reverse of privilege, it’s a, “Get ready for the rest of your life,” which, on the one hand, is true, but on the other hand you should remember to be positive.  Teach people to love who they are instead of trying to change it.  

And that’s why number 47 is my favorite on this list, because privilege means that you had no idea that this is what people go through.  You may be aware of racism or sexism or homophobia in a large sense, but not on this personal level, where you know immediately when you walk into a place to be on guard in case if you meet that one asshole, or when people in your own minority group are judging you over something so silly: picking college courses, not going to the get togethers because you have nothing in common with anyone there because you watch anime and write fanfiction, things like that.

Xbox Requires an internet connection. Here’s how it works: Every 24 hours your Xbox will try to connect to Microsoft’s servers for verification. If it is unable to connect, sucks to be you. You’re blocked from playing even single player games until it can connect.

Do you like renting games, lending them to a friend, or even borrowing them from a friend? No longer possible. Every Xbox One game you get must be registered to your Xbox live account to be played. After that point it will only work for you. No one else can use it unless they pay a fee. Essentially it works like this. You pick up a used Xbox One game from somewhere or someone, pop it into your console. The system verifies it’s been registered to your account. Uh-oh, it isn’t! In order to play it, you have to pay Microsoft a fee, which is currently slated to be full retail price. Doesn’t matter how scratched up it is or how cheap you got it at gamestop or from a friend. You aren’t just buying the physical copies anymore. You’re paying Microsoft for a LICENSE to be allowed to play that game.

It is worth mentioning Microsoft is exploring ways for you to trade in and resell your used games. This is rumored to mean that you can sell your digital license to play the game (registration) back to microsoft, likely for microsoft points. You can then trade in the game at gamespot for some cash if you like. Either way, as it currently stands, the new owner would still have to pay a fee on top of the price of actually buying the physical copy.

Is it worth mentioning that Microsoft if shafting Indie Developers as well? Where as on Playstation Network or (whatever the Wii has) Indie Developers can self publish their content easily. Playstation even encourages this. Microsoft however forces these Indie Devs to enter publishing deals with them to be allowed to market their content. You don’t go through them, you don’t get to sell what you developed.

I’m not quite done yet! Now, I’m sure you heard a lot about “TV TV TV TV SPORTS TV TV SPORTS SPORTS TV.” Yes, the Xbox is slated to be able to stream live tv, live sports, etc. So let me ask you this. You obviously already have something like cable or DirecTV. Do you really want to shell out hundreds of dollars more and pay a monthly subscription fee to have another television provider? Yes, I said hundreds of dollars, and I don’t mean the cost of the console. To view live TV from the Xbox you are required to purchase ANOTHER separate device for it to work. Why would you even consider shelling out more money for something you already have anyway? Even if you didn’t, DirecTV is cheaper. Or you could even subscribe you Hulu.com and watch live tv on your computer. FOR MUCH CHEAPER. You essentially have to buy another cable box if you don’t have one. And if you do… what do you need the Xbox One for?

So far we’ve discovered that the Xbox One is not really a gaming console, at least… not a consumer friendly gaming console. It’s being marketed as an all-in-one home entertainment system. Something to replace all of the other devices in your house. But there are drawbacks even to that. Put on your tin foil hats for this part folks. Take from it what you will, all I’ll say is… possibilities…

The Xbox One’s features will not function unless the Kinect is plugged in and active. This is not an optional piece anymore.

So imagine your Kinect piece breaks? Tough luck, no more Xbox for you. But you know what’s worse?

Pay attention, because this is important. The Kinect is always watching. Always listening. Even when the system is off.

Yes. One of the ways to turn the system on is to audibly say: “Xbox On” while the system is off. The Kinect, which is always on, hears you and turns it on. Now this might seem like a cool feature, but did you know Microsoft patented a feature that would allow the Kinect’s camera (It’s no longer just a sensor, but a camera) to spy on you for the MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America?) While they may not actually do this, it is actually possible for them to do this now. It has a camera, and a microphone. The Kinect is always on. It is ALWAYS listening, ALWAYS watching.

An idea has been tossed around that by using this feature, it will allows game developers and movie produces to set a limited amount of how many people can be allowed to view the entertainment. So as a hypothetical example, you and three friends are watching a movie, which is the maximum allowed. A fourth friend enters the room and the Kinect’s sensor registers the fourth individual. The movie stops and you a prompted to pay a fee so that the extra individual may also view the film. Again, that is NOT currently the case, but these are the ideas currently being tossed around with the system’s current capabilities.

Now, just two more things and I’ll be done here!

This isn’t really a good or bad thing, but it’s annoying. It also explains how they can prevent you from playing a used game if you didn’t pay their fee. Xbox one no longer plays games off the discs, you HAVE to install them to the hard-drive in order to play them. I believe PS3 also has you do this (on a number of games but not always it seems), except that PS3 isn’t trying to Nickle and Dime you at every corner. It also seems according to this article there is something related to the Online portion at the beginning of this post. The option is there for Developers to require the Xbox to always be online to play their particular game. Well, it seems PC gamers and console gamers have one thing in common now… DRM.

(At least pirates on PC can bypass DRM easily. Not an option for Consoles.)

And last but not least, another annoyance… Xbox One will not be compatible with any and all current headsets. Nope, companies will either have to make new headsets altogether specifically for the Xbox One, and they have to adhere to what Microsoft wants. Look forward to price gouging.

Oh, one more thing… If you have an Xbox 360, don’t get rid of it. Why? Well if you want to keep playing your old 360 games you’ll need it. The Xbox One isn’t backwards compatible. At all. Not only that, but President of Microsoft’s Xbox Division Don Mattrick insults the very notion of backwards compatibility! He calls it: “Backwards thinking.”

That is all I have to say currently folks, and I hope you took the time to read this far. I’ll conclude with the following… please… PLEASE do not buy this console. Paying for this supports greedy and anti-consumer business practices. Speak with your wallet, and pass up the Xbox One. No matter what games it might have that you want, even if they are exclusive. Do the right thing and make a statement. Refuse to be nickle and dimed like this. Refuse to be seen as a mindless consumer who will buy anything tossed to them.

We won’t know much else until after E3, but as it stands now, the PS4 or a decent gaming PC is the best way to go.

(Originally posted on Facebook by one of my friends. He brings up many valid points. Mind you, I haven’t been a fan of Xbox in a long time and I will most likely get a PS4. But this confirms further for me that I won’t be getting an Xbox one any time in the foreseeable future.) 

All of this from one conference before a single game was even mentioned… besides Call of Duty.  Remember when game console conferences talked about… um… GAMES!  I have all of the systems too currently and they have their good sides and bad sides, but this?  This just… there’s no reason to even be excited, even if they did start announcing games I want.  There’s too many “what if” factors that make me hesitant.  What if my internet goes out?  What if my Kinect stops working?  What if I just want to try a game so I borrow it from a friend?  So like, what, that means I have to go to their house and play or they bring their system over to my place or… what?  What if I don’t want XBOX Live?  I don’t have it right now, because I don’t play online much, so… does that mean I can’t even play my XBOX?  

This is kinda hypocritical to me.  I mean, the Kinect is for what… family friendly casual gamers, right?  Would they really care about online?  Well now I guess they have to?  And wow, I can use it like a T.V…. but I have to buy a separate device for that?  Or I could, you know, keep the Hulu and Netflix I have already.  Hulu is what… $7 a month?  I’m really going to get rid of that for the XBOX One.  Even Amazon has streaming video!  

And let’s talk about backwards compatibility.  You might think it’s “backwards thinking,” but do you know how easy it is to get a new system if I know my old games will work?  It takes a long time for new systems to get a good game library.  You know why it was easy for me to get the 3DS even if it took like a year for it to take off?  Because my old DS games worked on it!  So I could get rid of my old DS, put it towards the new one, and wait patiently for it to get a good library.  Same with the Wii.  It played my GameCube games so, hell, why not get the better system?  You can say the same about the Wii U, which even has the decency to use your old accessories.  

You think they’d know that since the 360 does play XBOX games.  You think they’d know that from the number of people who complained about the PS3 not being backwards.  If for nothing else, we’ll at least be entertained until the games take off.  

We don’t want an “entertainment system” to provide us with cable T.V.  We want a game system.  GAME.  SYSTEM.  I wouldn’t even try to compete with Netflix and Hulu at this rate, I’d just have the apps on the system.  That’s it.  You’re not going to beat $7 a month.  You’re just… not.  Just stick with what you are: a game system.  Try doing what PS3 did, which is release old classics in better graphics (God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Ratchet and Clank) AND release new games (Uncharted, Little Big Planet, Infamous).  Hell, Nintendo hasn’t made a new character in ages, and as much as we complain you know as soon as they say “Legend of Zelda in HD” we’re all going to throw our money at them.  Because.  It’s.  A.  Good.  Game.

Bioshock Infinite and Racism - Part I

I wanna play this so bad

I don’t think I ever want to play this game. Especially with the first pic of what looks like a witch hunt and 2 black people about to be burned at the stake…

The racist imagery in this game was completely unnecessary and I bet they did it to be controversial on fucking purpose without any regard to how that would make people feel. Or with regard, but not for any concern more so than their own shits and giggles.

Like this game could have been just as good without the overblown racist imagery of Black people.

It wasn’t “unnecessary.” Racism isn’t something that needs to be explained subtly. The game is purposefully doing the opposite of what mass media today does: it’s not sugarcoating it. Columbia as a city is meant to represent the absolute worst of American history and American society, and that is exactly why it doesn’t hold back punches. A lot of our media likes to white wash history and dance around issues of racism in the very concepts of what it means to be American, but this game actually goes out of its way to show how unethical this ideology is. 

The game actually does a great job of pointing out problems in our social foundations of racism, sexism, corporate capitalist abuse, religious zealotry. I often hear other P.O.C. on Tumblr complain that the media is skewed to avoid making American and white history in general look bad. If anything, people should play this game, because it doesn’t pretend like American society is perfect: it’s a game that takes the concepts that built this nation to show how morally depraved they really are.

Columbia isn’t there for the player to like, and its citizens aren’t there for the player to want to emulate. It’s actually there as an example of exactly what is wrong with white colonialism, racism, xenophobia, white supremacist attitudes, etc.

This game is actually being attacked by white supremacists because they think it’s “anti-white,” since the game doesn’t pander. It’s brutal about its portrayal, but for a reason. A good reason.

I was shocked reading the preceeding comments before the last because I thought it was very clear, in even just the screen captures, that the point was to show how lurid racism was at that time. That it was simply a cold, honest portrayal of a sick philosophy at a turning point when it was still bold— not showing something you should agree with and espouse. And… I’ve been under the impression that the Bioshock games tend to present awful communities like that as examples of terrible things people tend to do but shouldn’t? The hedonism and avarice of it, the absurd cruelty of it, etc. That people put happy faces on absolute barbarism. This is something that needs displayed in all its disgusting glory because, indeed as the person previous said, our media today tries to dance around it, sugar coat it, hide it and pretend this ugly chapter never ever happened.

Presenting ugly, disgusting behaviors and ideologies for what they are is a means of educating people against those behaviors. When we hide and sugar coat everything, people put such great distance between themselves and it that they end up doing it, but don’t consider themselves worse for it. If you really think that pointing out how horrible something is by example means you’re being told to go do that, you’re a fucking moron. I’m sorry— but seriously. You can’t hide from everything you don’t like and a prime motivator for preventing foul behavior is to show it, and to show how foul that is. You SHOULD feel uncomfortable to see those sorts of things. And why avoid that? Why avoid discomfort? You can’t learn and be a human like that. Pain teaches you to avoid shit. It’s upsetting? Fantastic, now you know better how/why to not treat another human being. Without these lessons people get stupid fucking ideas in their heads that they’re supposed to be granted control over others because they want it, or that their partners are their property, or so on. and so forth. I know full fucking grown adults who can’t understand that racism is a thing and it totally happens and how that all works because they’ve never been forced to confront it or fully understand it. Or if not racism, homophobia or transphobia or ethnocentrism and sexism and so on. Everything gets turned into blanket statements and literalism and semantics. if they don’t personally experience it or are otherwise given the understanding of what it’s like to experience it, they simply don’t believe it and don’t give a fuck. No one wants to think critically, especially when it might mean they’re actually doing something bad and instead of seeing an opportunity for self improvement, they only think they’re being personally attacked and that it’s necessary for them to prove they’re perfect. Which is totally asinine. Of course people make mistakes, and the matter is whether or not they learn from it. Which takes us back to the top— without knowing what mistakes to avoid or how, you can’t hope not to commit them.

I don’t even play Bioshock, but doesn’t this game take place around the 1920s? If that’s the case, the makers of this game have every right to, oh I dunno, fucking make a period piece and be as historically accurate as possible.

Everyone who’s complaining about the game’s racism is stupid and really needs to attend a history class.

This games takes place in 1913, BEFORE the first Bioshock was taken place. 

And during pre 1920’s there was huge racism against Irishmen, Chinese men, and African Americans.

This game is probably one of the most accurately correct game in terms of history. Heck they even talked about the Pinkerton and how a lot of people were anti-union.

If you are turned off by the racism in this game, then that’s fine. This era wasn’t the best. But the fact that there is this extreme dislike towards this game because of the accurate history in this game then you are all ignorant.

All of this.  Couldn’t have said it better myself.  I love it when any form of media takes the time to be accurate, and I mean ACCURATE, about everything.  1913?  Yeah, um… those signs are going to be up there, and there’s going to be racism, and it’s going to be uncomfortable to look at.  And you know what?  It’s supposed to be uncomfortable.  That was a horrible period in history, and kudos to this game for showing it.  And kudos to this game for making you react to it.  You can’t have it both ways.  You can’t want more accurate portrayals then bash them for being, well, accurate.  You can’t say, “Ugh I wish they’d stop sugarcoating it,” then getting upset when they, you know, stop sugarcoating it.  

I remember this coming up in L.A. Noire, which was 1940s, and there’s a scene where the “n” word is used if I remember right, and you just stand there and listen as this guy pretty much treats this black guy like shit.  And you stand there and you listen.  Because, you know what, it sucks but it’s 1940.  I don’t expect to see white people and black people being best friends back then.  Not at all.  And if they were I’d call bullshit on it.  Bioshock is years before that.  You’re going to see hangings, and racism, and hatred, and bad things.  It’s 1913.  That’s what happened.  It sucks, but that’s what happened.  The ACTION ITSELF was unnecessary,  there was no reason at all to be so hateful towards a group of people.  But, guess what?  Once upon a time, people did that.  It’s a part of our history, and that’s what’s in the game.  

Stop thinking that a social topic is in the game just for shock factor, or to prove a point.  It’s not always about that.  It’s a part of our history, whether you want to deal with it or not.  Why are those signs up there?  Because it’s 1913 and signs like that existed in 1913.
