Full time work should entitle someone to enough pay for rent, food, bills, and leisure activities. Full time work for a full life wage. You put in your 8 hours a day, 5 days a week? You should be able to afford the basic shit you need in life, no matter where you work.
pisses me off that this is considered a radical statement.
I do agree with this but from economic standpoint if you are working at a job like McDonalds as someone flipping burgers and making fries you are getting paid for the amount of skill needed for the job. But if its any other job that requires you to have an actual skill that you can make a career out of then yeah you should be getting paid enough to live a standard life.
If you work FULL TIME you should be able to afford to fucking live. No, it doesn’t matter if it’s flipping burgers, these people contribute to our fucking economy and they MATTER. They should be allowed to be alive.
Jesus fucking Christ do you people hear yourselves?
People like this are why we can’t move on to issues like reducing how many hours is full time, or working out UBI.
We’re going to need to do that. Most people just don’t know what’s coming down the pipeline, without a major change to the structure of the economy, we’re looking at large scale permanent unemployment, even in the “skilled” labor force.
Also? Making food is a fucking skill. Running a fast food kitchen is a fucking skill. Operating a drive-thru is a goddamn fucking skill.
I do not know how to do these things. I have a masters degree and I have no fucking clue how to operate a deep fryer or make coffee drinks. I’d probably not be very good at it, because that kind of hands-on, fast-paced work is very hard for me.
But thankfully, there are people who are good at it, so I can do my job, and they can do theirs, and we can benefit one another by putting our skills to use in different areas. People who work in fast food are not less deserving of comfort and security in their lives just because their skills aren’t valued like they should be. That is a myth developed to deprive people of rights.
My friend works as a medical assistant and I’ve worked at McDonald’s and Starbucks. You know there’s a lot of things you gotta learn in this typa job?
Like in addition to it being physically demanding (standing up for 4-6 hours straight, carrying heavy ice/coffee, constantly getting burned by boiling water and an oven, a lot of reaching and squatting (like a lot a lot I lost 40 FUCKING pounds in a year okay this job demands a lot from the body)), there are actual skills required. Also your skin splits from using so much antibacterial soap.
Do you know what temperature different foods have to be to prevent contamination? If it’s a “cold” or “hot” plate?? Do You know how long food can be out before bacterial contamination can happen?? Do you know the difference between say 1% and heavy whipping cream? Can you teach a chemistry class using milk????? That’s p much what you gotta learn to be able to do. My friend who works as a medic was surprised, because I do more in my day than they do, and THEY told me that. They were shocked how much I actually do; I am on my feet more, talking to more people, I have a working knowledge of food germs food born illnesses and chemistry, I gotta do the same shit with sterilizing my tools the same exact way a doctor sterilizes theirs. Etc etc.
There’s no such thing as an unskilled job. There are only undervalued skills.
“There’s no such thing as an unskilled job. There are only undervalued skills.”
You should get a fair share in the wealth you are producing instead of most of the wealth your work produces, goes straight to the owner of the business AKA the fucking capitalist suit and tie asshole at the top of the pyramid.
even while flipping burgers, you do not get paid your full value, you get paid as little as possible, and you do labour for someone else.
i worked 100x harder in retail for longer hours than i ever have in my higher paying office setting
It kills me that people undervalue jobs that they benefit from everyday. The amount of fast food we eat, the amount of time we spend sitting in the drive thru for coffee, the fact that we practically have an entire day dedicated to shopping after Thanksgiving to the point that people camp outside retail stores… the fact that anyone can say, “Eh, they don’t deserve a livable wage cuz it’s just flipping burgers,” is insane, E S P E C I A L L Y when these kinds of jobs are the FIRST JOBS people point at whenever someone is out of work. “Have you tried McDonalds? You must not be trying hard enough if you haven’t gone there yet. You should AT LEAST GO WORK THERE!!!”
Oh? Really? But didn’t you just shit all over it?
satanlickmydick:
DEAR ANYONE WHO HAS EVER BEEN AFRAID OF BEING JUDGED BY THE CASHIER FOR BUYING SOMETHING:
I have been working in retail for three years and let me tell you: WE DON’T CARE!
Whether you’re a trans*boy buying tampons or you’re buying laxatives or you’re buying a thong or a package of hello kitty stickers, cashiers don’t give a shit, we’re usually too busy trying to find the damn bar code or trying to sign you up for a membership card. And honestly, half the stuff I ring up doesn’t even register in my brain. My thought process when ringing someone up is; *scan* *check screen* *scan* *check screen* oh crap did they just ask me something?
So don’t ever be afraid to buy something okay?
*kisses you and pats you on the head* Now go buy all the things!
All right real talk.
One time when I was working at GameStop I was doing a trade and someone came in with an XBOX and some games. I plugged in the XBOX to test it and when I opened the disc tray I saw that they had left their porn dvd in there. They looked so horrified and I was just like, “Here,” and gave it back before I proceeded to finish the trade, unphased, because we had a bunch of trade to process that day that was still on the back counter and the last thing I was concerned about was titty titty bang bang.

things i learned working in retail:
- people are so rude. hun it’s not my fault we’re out of black hair bands, i just work here. i’m sorry your child’s piercing is infected, but it’s probably because you changed it three weeks before you were meant to. no, you can’t ask me to serve you when i’m on my break; i’ve clocked out, i’m physically unable to - ok just shout at me anyway then nbd.
- people are impatient. sorry i couldn’t get to the till in 0.2 seconds when i was on the other side of the store.
- people have no concept of tidying up after themselves???? ok just drop that frozen rucksack on the floor when the peg is right in front of you????????? your child is knocking everything off the shelves and you can’t be arsed to tell them to stop??? what is the point of tearing a wig off a fixture and leaving it on a tower???????? stop????????? have some respect?????????
- ‘i’m sorry ma’am, we’re closed’ ‘i’ll just be two seconds’ (half an hour later………)
- why do people think it’s okay to interrupt when i’m obviously helping another customer then get annoyed when i say ‘sorry, i’ll be with you in two seconds’?????????
To add:
- It’s not my fault if you missed the return period. One day, I can cut you some slack. Six months? No.
- It’s not my fault if a manufactured thing made by a big name company doesn’t work. All I can do is return it for another thing and hope that this thing works. (i.e: 360 red ring)
- It’s not my fault if something happens, like any sort of hacking. I have no idea how to fix it, you have to take it up with them.
- If any sort of network is down (XBOX LIVE, ect.) I cannot get it back online for you. I don’t know how.
- No I don’t know why this thing you wanted got cancelled. Chances are, I’m not happy about it either. Please don’t take it out on me.
- I do not set the prices in the store.
- No I will not return something physically broken. The disc tray was not like that when I sold it to you. That serial number should still be there.
- No I don’t know why your card was declined. Yes I understand you had money in your account when you got here. That’s something you need to take up with your bank, I don’t control your money.
- I cannot break the law for you. If the law says I need an I.D. for this transaction, I need an I.D. for this transaction. Please don’t ask me to do something that will get me fired unless you are ready to pay my rent until I find a new job, which I probably won’t because I just broke the law for you.
• Banging on the locked door or gate will not get you into my store any faster.
• I’m sorry the credit card machines are down or our POS is down. I can only do so much to try fixing it and that takes time. There is an atm across the street.
• I am told to follow store policy. If it goes against my training I can’t help you. And yelling at me isn’t going to make me give it to you.
• It’s my JOB to come up to you and ask if you need help. I know you don’t or you would have come to me, but we have cameras.

Reblogging because it got better, especially with this last point. I don’t work retail anymore but I’ve been out shopping with people who look so annoyed when the clerk is like, “Hi, may I help you with something,” and they walk over to them. Yes, it is annoying, but they have higher ups who watch to make sure they do this because they assume that’s what customers want, and they will get in trouble for not coming from out behind the counter.
The same can be said when said clerk pitches a card to you. It doesn’t matter if you’ve said no the last five times you came in they have to ask or they will get in trouble for a poor performance and may even lose hours because someone else who does better numbers wise can use them. This isn’t to guilt you into getting some card you don’t want but please understand why these clerks ask you the same questions over and over again.
Hey everyone, not that I can stop people from going out shopping tomorrow, but if you do go out, please please PLEASE be kind to the employees. Friendly reminder that a lot of them will be missing time with their family to be there, and for a lot of places it is not an optional shift, or one that pays extra. So just be kind and respectful of the employees out there. Remember:
1. Something being out of stock is not their fault
2. Yelling never solves anything
3. No they cannot hold sale items for you
4. It’s not their fault if the store didn’t have enough of an item
5. Yes they realize how early you got there, they know this because they had to be there to serve you
6. They are not going to ruin your Christmas by not having something, just wait a bit, said item will be in stock again
7. No they cannot call another store it’s going to be extremely busy
8. They are going as fast as they can to get to everyone, please be patient
9. They realize the line is long, please do not complain to them about it
10. Do not belittle them. They do have to serve you, yes, but that does not mean you treat them like shit
Happy holidays, and be safe out there!

don’t yell at cashiers if they are asking you to sign up for a charge/debit card - their employers are pushing them to ask everyone
don’t yell at cashiers if they’re taking too long folding your clothes in your bags - their managers are telling them not to ball up your shit bc it shows you care
don’t yell at cashiers bc they are taking a while to scan your card- machines fuck up
don’t yell at cashiers pls
Don’t yell at cashiers if they ask for ID for an item that requires ID - it’s state law.
Don’t yell at cashiers if your card is declined - they don’t know why it’s being declined they can’t answer that for you even if you swear you have money in your account.
Don’t yell at cashiers if they’re out of stock of something - it’s not their fault.
Don’t yell at cashiers.

Iiiits thaaaaat tiiiiime of the year…. when consumers try to fuuuuck low-wage workeeerrs…..
It’s my first time working retail for Black Friday this year
PLEASE BE KIND, GENTLE, AND CONSIDERATE
Shouldn’t you be this way ALL the time? Its just common curtesy
Well, yes, of course.
But people have a habit of forgetting common courtesy when trying to snatch up the best deals.
Please please PLEASE be kind to your cashiers and retail workers. Its seriously major pressure for workers on black friday from not just customers but their bosses so they already deal with a lot of stress :c its crazy i’ve worked black friday shifts and its no fun and i’ve had plenty of kin people who would help me if something happened but a LOT JUST MADE MESSES and either pushed and shoved and I remember that like I had a co-worker in charge of gaurding the DVD rack and he had to keep telling people to back off till the time it opened was. And one lady literally shoved into him just a few seconds before he was going to let people through and shit just went like CRAZY my poor co-worker had to scramble outta there :c
Just don’t be a harmful rude shit on Black Friday, or I will be very ashamed of you >:I
hahhaa guess who’s scared of working in the diner during the holidays
it me
Please remember the following:
1. If something is out of stock it is not the employees fault
2. It is also not their fault if the store didn’t have enough things to begin with (spoiler: there will never be enough)
3. It is not their fault if the person in front of you bought the last of something
4. It is not their fault that the store opened so early and it is not their fault if people beat you there
5. Yes they understand that you’ve been outside waiting for a long time but, you know what, they’re taking time to be there for you. You are not the only one whose time is valuable
6. Please be patient, you are not the only customer there, someone will be with you when they can
7. Thank them. Please, please thank them, even if they don’t have what you want please give them a little bit of positivity
8. The holidays aren’t going to come to an end if that thing you want is sold out, chances are the store will get more of it in a few days
As someone who did six years of retail, all of these things are necessary.
The amount of non-involved planning retail chains is staggering, I've worked 2 years of the Wii's launch and had all manner of awful things said to me because of my weight/hair length and I've even been held down by some angry parents over shortages. I can't express how important it is for shoppers to understand that if something goes wrong, it's almost never the employee's fault, and even sometimes it's rarely management's fault. Getting mad only stresses out retail workers.

This. Very much this. For example, I use to have to deal with angry customers about trade-ins. Now I can talk forever about trade-in values and stuff but I don’t want to address that. I want to address this situation:
What killed me the most about trade-ins is that here in St. Paul, there are pawn laws (I imagine this is the case in every city), and one thing they do is that your I.D. CANNOT be expired. Now, this isn’t even GameStop’s decision, but the state of Minnesota. But I’ll never forget this man who not only insisted I do the trade anyway and just “put in whatever number,” then insisted I use my own I.D., but he then turned to look at his kid and said, “Well sweetie looks like you’re not getting your DS, because this lady won’t let me do the trade.”
And this poor little girl started crying so hard in the store, and just… how is state law my fault, or the company’s fault? You just made your kid cry for no reason other than being a dick.
